Turbo Class Settlement: Reimbursement, Warranty Extension, and Deadlines

The Turbo Class Settlement resolves a class action against Volkswagen and Audi over allegedly defective turbochargers in the EA888 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, and it covers roughly 3.9 million vehicles across the United States and Puerto Rico. If you owned or leased a covered 2008–2024 Volkswagen or Audi, you may qualify for 40% or 50% reimbursement of a past turbocharger repair, and if your vehicle uses the Generation 3 engine, for a warranty extension that pays half the cost of a future wastegate repair at an authorized dealer.¹ The court gave final approval in December 2025, and the settlement became effective on January 9, 2026.²

Which Vehicles Are Covered

The settlement covers a wide range of 2008–2024 Volkswagen and Audi models built with Generation 1, 2, or 3 EA888 engines. Not every model year of a listed nameplate is included automatically. Eligibility runs by Vehicle Identification Number, and the settlement website has a VIN lookup tool to confirm whether a specific car is in the class.³

Volkswagen

Generation 1: 2008–2014 GTI and Golf R, 2012–2013 Beetle, 2009 Jetta Sportwagen, 2008–2013 Jetta Sedan and GLI, 2009–2016 Eos, 2008–2010 Passat, 2009–2017 CC, and 2009–2018 Tiguan.
Generation 3: 2015–2018 Golf, 2015–2021 GTI, 2015–2019 Golf R, 2015–2019 Golf Sportwagen and Alltrack, 2019–2024 Jetta GLI, 2019–2021 Arteon, 2018–2023 Atlas, and 2020–2023 Atlas Cross Sport.

No Generation 2 Volkswagen vehicles are included.⁴

Audi

Generation 1: 2008–2009 A3 and 2015–2018 Q3.
Generation 2: 2009–2014 A4, 2010–2014 A5, 2013–2015 A6, 2011–2014 Q5, and 2011–2012 TT.
Generation 3: 2015–2020 A3, 2019–2024 Q3, and 2016–2023 TT.

Reimbursement for a Past Turbocharger Repair

If you paid out of pocket for a qualifying turbocharger repair before September 15, 2025, and the repair was done within 8.5 years or 85,000 miles of the vehicle’s original in-service date, you were eligible to submit a claim. The settlement pays for only one turbocharger repair per vehicle.⁴

The reimbursement percentage depends on the repair documentation. A 50% reimbursement applies when the repair records confirm the failure came from the specific wastegate defects at issue in the lawsuit: link plate and pin wear in Generation 1 and 2 engines, or fork head and link pin corrosion in Generation 3 engines. A 40% reimbursement applies when the records don’t specify the cause. Claimants at the 40% level also have to show they followed the vehicle’s oil maintenance schedule within a 10% variance.⁴

If the repair was done at an independent shop rather than an authorized Volkswagen or Audi dealer, the invoice amount used to calculate the percentage is capped at $3,850. Any reimbursement is then reduced by goodwill payments, insurance payouts, or prior concessions the owner already received.⁴ For reference, dealership replacements of the full turbocharger assembly have run around $5,000, according to the Automobile Protection Association.⁵

Warranty Extension on Generation 3 Vehicles

Owners of Generation 3 class vehicles get a forward-looking benefit as well. Starting September 15, 2025, Volkswagen extended the new vehicle limited warranty on those cars to 8.5 years or 85,000 miles from the in-service date, whichever comes first. Under the extension, authorized dealers cover 50% of the parts and labor cost to repair or replace a turbocharger that fails because of wastegate corrosion.¹

For Generation 3 vehicles that had already passed 8.5 years as of September 15, 2025, the extension ran through November 14, 2025, or 85,000 miles, whichever came first. The extended coverage transfers to later owners as long as the time and mileage limits haven’t run out. It doesn’t cover failures caused by abuse, modification, poor maintenance, collisions, or vandalism.⁴

Who Is Excluded

Several groups don’t qualify even if they own a listed model: judges who presided over the case, current employees and officers of the defendants and their families, used car dealers, entities that bought a covered vehicle for commercial resale, purchasers of salvage-title vehicles, insurers, and issuers of extended warranties or service contracts. Class members who had previously settled and released claims against the defendants are also excluded, as is anyone who filed a timely request to opt out by October 15, 2025.⁴

Deadlines and Payout Timing

The deadline to submit a reimbursement claim was November 29, 2025. Claims were filed online through the settlement website or by mail to JND Legal Administration, the claims administrator.⁴ A complete claim needed a signed claim form and a repair invoice showing the owner’s name, the vehicle’s make, model, and VIN, the repair facility’s name and address, the date and mileage at the time of repair, a parts-and-labor breakdown of the work performed, the total charged, and proof of payment. If the repair was done at a non-dealer shop during the original warranty period, the claimant also had to show a good-faith effort to first take the vehicle to an authorized dealership. Claimants at the 40% tier had to submit oil maintenance records or a declaration explaining why they were unavailable.²

Valid reimbursement claims are to be mailed within 150 days of either the date the claim was received with complete documentation or the effective date, whichever is later. With the effective date set at January 9, 2026, the outer deadline for initial payouts falls at approximately early June 2026.² JND is reviewing claims and will notify claimants as the review completes. How the Deal Has Been Received

The Automobile Protection Association, a Canadian consumer group that has tracked the turbocharger issue closely, called the settlement a “poor deal” for Generation 3 owners. The APA said the 85,000-mile ceiling is low compared with the 100,000- to 120,000-mile limits common in other powertrain settlements, and that the $3,850 cap on non-dealer repairs covers only about half of what a U.S. dealer charges. The group also criticized the one-repair limit, saying roughly one in seven owners reported a second failure of the replacement part.⁶ The APA argued that Volkswagen should have offered full coverage for less costly aftermarket repairs or an affordable repair kit, noting that independent shops can fix the wastegate pivot for $1,500 to $2,000 using stainless-steel parts.⁵ Volkswagen denied the underlying allegations and maintained the turbochargers were not defective.⁷

Canadian Owners

The Turbo Class Settlement covers vehicles distributed by Volkswagen Group of America in the United States and Puerto Rico. It does not extend to Canada. Separate class actions on similar turbocharger wastegate claims were filed in British Columbia in the spring of 2025 and, on a narrower basis, in Quebec in January 2023 by the firm Adams Avocat. Both were still awaiting decisions as of late 2025.⁸
