Tyler Hadley’s sentence is two consecutive life terms in Florida state prison for the first-degree murders of his parents, Blake and Mary-Jo Hadley, in July 2011. The Original 2014 Sentence
Hadley pleaded no contest in February 2014 in St. Lucie Circuit Court to two counts of first-degree murder with a weapon.2CNN. On March 20, 2014, Judge Robert R. Makemson sentenced him to two life terms without the possibility of parole, describing the crimes as “brutal, heinous and premeditated.” The judge also found that Hadley had lied about hearing auditory hallucinations. Why the Sentence Was Overturned
The timing of Hadley’s case put it in the middle of a shifting area of law. In 2012, the U.S. Supreme Court decided Miller v. Alabama, which struck down mandatory life-without-parole sentences for juvenile offenders and required sentencing judges to weigh the mitigating features of youth. By early 2014, when Hadley was sentenced, the Florida Legislature had not yet enacted a sentencing scheme to bring state law into line with that ruling.5FindLaw. Hadley v. State
On April 27, 2016, a three-judge panel of Florida’s Fourth District Court of Appeal — Judges Alan Forst, Matthew Stevenson, and Robert Gross — reversed the sentence and sent the case back for resentencing.6Palm Beach Post. The trial court had treated the two murders as giving Hadley a “prior criminal history” of capital felonies, when in fact both counts arose from the same criminal episode and could not count as prior convictions against each other. The 2018 Resentencing
The resentencing hearing ran for six days in October 2018 before Judge Gary Sweet in St. Lucie County. Defense counsel asked for concurrent 40-year sentences and argued Hadley was capable of rehabilitation, pointing to a defense psychologist’s testimony about his “track record of rehabilitation” in prison.7WPBF. Prosecutors asked for life. Chief Assistant State Attorney Tom Bakkedahl told the court, “If Tyler Hadley doesn’t deserve life in prison then no one does,” and challenged the psychological testimony by suggesting Hadley had manipulated doctors with feigned hallucinations. Mike Hadley again testified in support of life without parole, saying of the original sentence, “He was given the only sentence that made any sense at all.”8WPBF. On December 20, 2018, Judge Sweet reimposed life. “At this point, whether or not he will receive effective treatment and can be rehabilitated is anyone’s guess,” he said. “The appropriate sentence for Hadley is life for the murders of his parents.”9WPBF. Can Tyler Hadley Ever Be Released?
Yes, in theory. Florida’s revised juvenile sentencing framework attaches a mandatory judicial review to a life sentence imposed on a juvenile offender. Hadley’s review is calculated from his 2011 arrest and falls around 2036.1CBS 12. Family Relieved Tyler Hadley Re-Sentenced to Life
At that hearing, a judge weighs whether Hadley has shown maturity and rehabilitation, whether he still poses a risk to society, and related factors including his educational progress, mental health assessments, and any expressions of remorse.10Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes Section 921.1402 If the court finds he is rehabilitated and fit to reenter society, it must modify the sentence and impose at least five years of probation. If it does not, it must issue a written order explaining why the life sentence stands.
The review is an opportunity to argue for release, not a guarantee of it. Public Defender Diamond Litty said the law at least gives Hadley a future chance to make that case. Bakkedahl framed the same fact differently: “There’s absolutely a chance that in 25 years somebody will be back here in this courtroom, and we’ll be doing this all over again.”11WPTV. The Crime Behind the Sentence
Blake Hadley, 54, a plant operator with 30 years at Florida Power & Light, and Mary-Jo Hadley, a first-grade teacher, were killed inside the family’s Port St. Lucie home on July 16, 2011.12CBS News. 1,000 Mourn Fla. Sentencing-phase testimony described a history of mental health treatment, medication, and substance use. Dr. Wade Myers, a psychiatrist at Brown University, testified that Hadley had major depression with psychotic features and had experienced obsessive homicidal thoughts for two to three months before the killings.15TC Palm (archived).
