Robinson’s parents recognized their son in the FBI photos that same day. His father called him, and Robinson implied during the conversation that he planned to take his own life. On the day of the shooting, Robinson texted Twiggs to look under his keyboard, where Twiggs found a handwritten note reading: “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I’m going to take it.”7The New York Times. Robinson also discussed concerns about fingerprints left on the rifle, which he said he had abandoned in a bush where he changed clothing. What Discord Said About Its Own Investigation
Discord conducted an internal review and issued a statement saying the company “identified a Discord account associated with the suspect, but have found no evidence that the suspect planned this incident or promoted violence on Discord.”10The Hill. Judge Graf ruled that the preliminary hearing would be open to the public and press, though certain exhibits, including surveillance video, forensic reports, and alleged messages from Robinson, would be restricted from public copying.17CBS News. The FBI’s Look at the Wider Discord Group
The FBI’s investigation extended beyond Robinson himself. FBI Director Kash Patel told the Senate Judiciary Committee that agents were “running down” everyone who interacted with Robinson on Discord, and that the number of users under scrutiny was “a lot more” than the roughly 20 members of the group chat where Robinson’s messages first surfaced. Officials found no evidence that members of the chat group knew about a plan to target Kirk. Governor Spencer Cox told reporters that Robinson and his associates had discussed Kirk’s upcoming campus visit and debated whether the activist was “full of hate and spreading hate.” Counter-extremism researchers who examined the case suggested Robinson’s violence may have been driven by a single-issue grievance related to Kirk’s rhetoric on transgender rights, rather than any organized ideological affiliation.20NPR. Robinson had no prior criminal history. He was registered to vote as unaffiliated and had never cast a ballot.
