Vince McMahon’s lawsuits span five fronts: a sex trafficking and sexual abuse civil suit brought by former WWE employee Janel Grant, a settled Securities and Exchange Commission enforcement action, a federal criminal investigation that closed without charges, a Delaware shareholder class action over the WWE-UFC merger that has reached a settlement in principle, and a Connecticut reckless-driving case resolved through pretrial probation. As of mid-2026, the Grant lawsuit, the most serious of the group, is on track to leave public court for private, confidential arbitration.
The Janel Grant Sex Trafficking Lawsuit
On January 25, 2024, Janel Grant filed a civil complaint in the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut against McMahon, WWE, and former WWE talent relations head John Laurinaitis. The case, 3:24-cv-00090, was assigned to Judge Sarah F. Russell.1CourtListener. Grant v. World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc.
The complaint alleges McMahon used his position as CEO to coerce Grant into a sexual relationship beginning in March 2020, leveraging her employment and threatening financial ruin and legal retaliation. It alleges he shared sexually explicit photos and videos of her with other men, including WWE staff and a prominent athlete under contract with the company, recruited other individuals to have sexual relations with her, and attempted to traffic her to a WWE performer for a live event in March 2022. It also describes an alleged sexual assault in June 2021 inside Laurinaitis’s office at WWE headquarters, in which McMahon and Laurinaitis allegedly restrained Grant and ignored her pleas to stop.2Wall Street Journal. Grant v. WWE Complaint
Grant accuses WWE of conducting what she calls a “sham” internal investigation that failed to interview her, and of pressuring her into signing a January 2022 nondisclosure agreement tied to a $3 million settlement, of which McMahon allegedly paid only $1 million.3CNBC. McMahon has denied the allegations, calling the lawsuit “replete with lies, obscene made-up instances that never occurred, and is a vindictive distortion of the truth.” His legal team has argued he and Grant had a consensual relationship and has pointed to text messages as evidence.4Variety. The Arbitration Pivot
From the start, McMahon and WWE sought to move the case out of federal court and into private arbitration, relying on a clause in the 2022 NDA designating arbitration as the “sole and exclusive legal method” for resolving disputes.5Sportico. Vince McMahon WWE Arbitration Defense in Janel Grant Case McMahon filed a motion to compel arbitration in April 2024; WWE followed in May. Grant opposed, arguing the NDA was signed under duress and barred by the 2022 federal Speak Out Act.
Then the posture shifted. On June 11, 2026, Grant, McMahon, and WWE filed a joint motion to move the dispute into confidential arbitration, saying they were in “active discussions regarding a potential agreement to arbitrate.” Judge Russell granted the motion the next day and canceled a June 16 hearing, directing the parties to file a joint status report by July 10, 2026, with an August court hearing if terms are not finalized.6POST Wrestling. The Laurinaitis Settlement
Laurinaitis, accused of participating in the June 2021 assault and facilitating encounters directed by McMahon, had initially denied the allegations and backed McMahon’s public denials.7Variety. WWE Employee Lawsuit Vince McMahon Sexual Abuse Settlement John Laurinaitis On May 28, 2025, Grant and Laurinaitis filed to dismiss all claims against him with prejudice under a confidential settlement in which Laurinaitis agreed to cooperate and provide evidence in Grant’s ongoing case against McMahon and WWE.8NBC News. The Federal Criminal Investigation
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York confirmed in May 2024 that a federal investigation involving McMahon, WWE, and Laurinaitis was pending, and the Grant lawsuit was stayed at the government’s request while that probe continued.9Deadline. WWE Vince McMahon Federal Investigation A federal search warrant had been executed against McMahon in July 2023, and a grand jury subpoena served the same month sought documents related to prior sexual misconduct allegations and communications with alleged victims.10The Athletic. Deposition testimony from WWE President Nick Khan later revealed that search warrants served on McMahon, WWE COO Brad Blum, and McMahon’s personal assistant explicitly referenced sex trafficking statutes, and that a grand jury subpoena to WWE cited both securities and sex trafficking statutes.11POST Wrestling. Nick Khan Testified That DOJ Investigated Sex Trafficking That contradicted McMahon’s characterization of the probe as involving only “minor accounting errors.”
No federal criminal charges were filed. In February 2025, McMahon’s attorney Robert W. Allen stated that the probe had “definitively concluded and will not result in charges.” Court rulings indicated the grand jury had focused primarily on whether McMahon engaged in a scheme to circumvent internal accounting controls and mislead auditors to conceal the hush-money payments, rather than on trafficking charges directly.12New York Post. The SEC Settlement
On January 10, 2025, the SEC announced an enforcement action against McMahon for failing to disclose two settlement agreements totaling $10.5 million to WWE’s board, legal department, accountants, or auditors. The first, signed in 2019, obligated him to pay a former employee $3 million to prevent disclosure of a relationship and release potential claims. The second, in 2022, was a $7.5 million payment to a former independent contractor under similar terms.13SEC. SEC Press Release
The SEC found McMahon knowingly circumvented WWE’s internal accounting controls, made false or misleading statements to the company’s auditor, and caused WWE to overstate its 2018 net income by approximately 8% and its 2021 net income by approximately 1.7%. He agreed to pay $1,730,915.90, consisting of a $400,000 civil penalty and roughly $1.3 million in Sarbanes-Oxley reimbursement to WWE, and consented to the order without admitting or denying the findings.13SEC. The Shareholder Class Action
In October 2023, former WWE stockholders filed a class action in the Delaware Court of Chancery, alleging McMahon orchestrated a “sham sale process” in connection with the $21 billion WWE-UFC merger that created TKO Group Holdings. The shareholders alleged McMahon manipulated the process to retain personal control and rejected higher offers in favor of a deal with Endeavor Group Holdings CEO Ari Emanuel.16Bloomberg Law. Central to the case was the claim that Emanuel promised McMahon continued employment at TKO and legal support during federal investigations. Discovery produced a voicemail transcript in which Emanuel noted that his attorney’s firm included former Justice Department lawyers who had previously investigated McMahon, calling that connection “helpful.”17Delaware Online. McMahon Sanctions Cloud Trial Over $21 Billion WWE-UFC Merger
On May 26, 2026, Vice Chancellor J. Travis Laster sanctioned McMahon and Nick Khan for spoliation of evidence, finding they “acted recklessly” by failing to preserve electronically stored information. Specifically, they used auto-delete settings on the Signal messaging app despite two formal preservation instructions from WWE’s assistant general counsel in June 2022 and January 2023. The court imposed evidentiary presumptions the defendants would have had to rebut at trial, including that Emanuel’s promises influenced McMahon’s decisions and that McMahon and Khan steered negotiations toward Endeavor and away from other bidders.19Bloomberg Law. The Reckless Driving Case
McMahon was charged with reckless driving and following too closely after a July 24, 2025, incident on the Merritt Parkway in Westport, Connecticut. Prosecutors said he was driving a 2024 Bentley Continental in excess of 90 mph when he rear-ended a BMW sedan, causing his car to strike the median; debris then led a Ford Fusion to crash into a guardrail. No serious injuries were reported.20Stamford Advocate. Vince McMahon WWE Reckless Driving
On October 16, 2025, Judge Gary White at the state Superior Court in Stamford granted McMahon entry into accelerated rehabilitation, a one-year pretrial probation program. Conditions include a $1,000 charitable contribution and valid licensure and insurance. The charges are scheduled for dismissal on October 15, 2026, if he completes the program.21New York Daily News.
