On December 8, 1984, Mötley Crüe singer Vince Neil was driving drunk in Redondo Beach, California when he lost control of his Ford Pantera, crossed into oncoming traffic, and killed his passenger, Hanoi Rocks drummer Nicholas “Razzle” Dingley. Two people in another car suffered brain damage in the same collision. Neil’s blood alcohol level was measured at 0.17, more than twice California’s legal limit at the time. He pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter and drunk driving and served between 15 and 20 days in county jail. The Night of the Crash
Hanoi Rocks was in Los Angeles on its first American tour, a Finnish glam band widely expected to break through internationally. Mötley Crüe hosted a party at Neil’s home. When the alcohol ran low, Neil and Razzle got into Neil’s 1972 Pantera to make a liquor store run. Both had been drinking heavily. Neither wore a seat belt.
At about 6:38 p.m., Neil was doing 65 mph in a 25 mph residential zone. The car hit a wet patch. He swerved to avoid a parked fire truck, lost control, and slid sideways into the opposite lane, where two oncoming vehicles struck the Pantera.1Louder Sound. Who Was Killed and Injured
Razzle, born Nicholas Dingley, was 24. He suffered massive head injuries and was pronounced dead at South Bay Hospital at 7:19 p.m.1Louder Sound. The Car Crash That Killed Hanoi Rocks’ Razzle
In one of the oncoming cars were 18-year-old Lisa Hogan of Rancho Palos Verdes and 20-year-old Daniel Smithers of Hermosa Beach. Hogan sustained a broken arm, two broken legs, and brain damage that caused psychomotor seizures. She spent 28 days in a coma.3Los Angeles Times. The Guilty Plea and 20-Day Sentence
Neil was arrested at the scene. In July 1985, he pleaded guilty in Torrance Superior Court to vehicular manslaughter and drunk driving under a plea agreement with the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office. The original deal contained no jail time. A probation report then recommended incarceration, and the deal was revised after it became clear that insurance would cover part of Neil’s restitution obligation.4Los Angeles Times. On September 20, 1985, Judge Edward A. Hinz Jr. sentenced Neil to 30 days in county jail, five years of probation, 200 hours of community service, and $2.6 million in restitution. The money was split among the victims: $1.8 million to Lisa Hogan, $571,000 to Daniel Smithers, and $200,000 to Razzle’s estate, administered by his parents.4Los Angeles Times. Neil could have received up to eight years in prison. He ultimately served 15 to 20 days, with the rest of the 30-day sentence cut for good behavior.6Yahoo Entertainment. The prosecution argued Neil could use his platform to warn against drunk driving; the victims’ attorneys explained they had not pushed for prison because Neil needed to keep touring in order to earn the restitution money.3Los Angeles Times. Neil’s Own Words on the Sentence
Mötley Crüe’s 1985 album Theatre of Pain carried an anti-drunk-driving note in its liner text: “If and/or when you drink — don’t take the wheel. Live and learn — so we can all fuckin’ rock our asses off together for a long, long time to come.” Drummer Tommy Lee told Rolling Stone he was uncomfortable being cast as a public-service messenger, saying he was “not a preacher” and doubted young fans would listen.7Rolling Stone. Two decades later, Neil was blunt about what his money had bought him. He told Blender magazine in 2005: “I wrote a $2.5 million check for vehicular manslaughter when Razzle died. I should have gone to prison. I definitely deserved to go to prison. But I did 30 days in jail and got laid and drank beer, because that’s the power of cash. That’s fucked up.”8NME. Hanoi Rocks guitarist Andy McCoy has said Neil never apologized to him. Speaking on Artists on Record Starring ADIKA Live! in 2022, McCoy said, “I never even got as much as an apology from that motherfucker,” adding that when they encounter each other in person, “he runs away.”9Loudwire. What Happened to Hanoi Rocks
Razzle’s death effectively ended the band. Singer Michael Monroe called him the group’s “heart and soul.” Before the crash, Hanoi Rocks had signed with CBS Records, released Two Steps from the Move with producer Bob Ezrin, and was selling out shows in the United States. Bassist Sam Yaffa left shortly after the funeral. Former Clash drummer Terry Chimes filled in for the last European dates, including a televised Helsinki show where Monroe performed on a fractured ankle. The band tried to continue with new members but collapsed after a chaotic Poland tour in June 1985.10Louder Sound. Neil’s Second DUI Arrest in 2010
Whatever anti-drunk-driving pledge attached to Neil’s 1985 sentence did not hold. On June 27, 2010, Las Vegas police stopped him driving a Lamborghini 60 mph in a 45 mph zone on Desert Inn Road, weaving between lanes. A breath test put his blood alcohol at nearly three times the legal limit. He failed three field sobriety tests.12Review-Journal.
