VW and Audi Turbocharger Settlement: Reimbursement and Warranty

The VW and Audi turbocharger settlement resolves claims that the wastegate in the EA888 2.0-liter engine causes premature turbocharger failure across roughly 3.9 million Volkswagen and Audi vehicles sold or leased in the United States and Puerto Rico. A federal judge in New Jersey gave final approval on December 8, 2025 in Kimball v. Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.¹ Owners get two possible benefits: partial reimbursement for a turbo repair they already paid for, and, if the vehicle is a Generation 3 model, an extended warranty that covers half the cost of a future turbo repair at an authorized dealer. Volkswagen denied any defect and admitted no liability.²

The reimbursement claim deadline was November 29, 2025, and it has passed. The warranty extension for Generation 3 vehicles is still in effect going forward.²

Which Vehicles Are Covered

Eligibility is tied to a specific Vehicle Identification Number, not to a model year alone. You can check a VIN through the lookup tool on the settlement website or by calling the administrator at 1-855-779-6685.³ The settlement sorts covered vehicles into three “generations” of the EA888 engine, and the generation matters because it determines what benefit you can claim.

Volkswagen models on the list:

Generation 1: 2008–2014 GTI and Golf R, 2012–2013 Beetle, 2009 Jetta Sportwagen, 2008–2013 Jetta Sedan and GLI, 2009–2016 Eos, 2008–2010 Passat, 2009–2017 CC, and 2009–2018 Tiguan.
Generation 3: 2015–2018 Golf, 2015–2021 GTI, 2015–2019 Golf R, 2015–2019 Golf Sportwagen and Alltrack, 2019–2024 Jetta GLI, 2019–2021 Arteon, 2018–2023 Atlas, and 2020–2023 Atlas Cross Sport.

Audi models on the list:

Generation 1: 2008–2009 A3 and 2015–2018 Q3.
Generation 2: 2009–2014 A4, 2010–2014 A5, 2013–2015 A6, 2011–2014 Q5, and 2011–2012 TT.
Generation 3: 2015–2020 A3, 2019–2024 Q3, and 2016–2023 TT.

No Volkswagen vehicles fall into Generation 2. That group is Audi only.³

The class covers current and past owners and lessees who bought or leased in the U.S. or Puerto Rico. Excluded from the class: used car dealers, anyone who bought for commercial resale, buyers of salvage-titled vehicles, insurers and extended warranty issuers, anyone who previously settled and released Volkswagen, and anyone who filed a timely request to opt out (the deadline to opt out or object was October 15, 2025).³

Reimbursement for a Past Turbo Repair

Owners and lessees across all three generations who paid out of pocket for a turbocharger repair before September 15, 2025, and within 8.5 years or 85,000 miles of the vehicle’s in-service date, could file for partial reimbursement. One qualifying repair per vehicle.⁴

The percentage you got back depended on what the repair paperwork said. If the invoice specifically identified the wastegate failure the lawsuit alleged (link plate and pin wear on Generation 1 and 2 vehicles, or fork head and link pin corrosion on Generation 3), reimbursement was 50% of the invoice. If the paperwork did not identify the cause, reimbursement dropped to 40%, and you also had to show you kept up with oil maintenance.⁵ If the repair was done somewhere other than an authorized Volkswagen or Audi dealer, the invoice amount used in that percentage calculation was capped at $3,850. Any goodwill payment, insurance reimbursement, or other concession Volkswagen had already made was subtracted.²

The claim filing window closed on November 29, 2025.

Extended Warranty for Generation 3 Vehicles

If you own or lease a Generation 3 vehicle, the settlement extends the New Vehicle Limited Warranty to 8.5 years or 85,000 miles from the in-service date, effective September 15, 2025. Under that extension, Volkswagen pays 50% of the parts and labor cost for a turbocharger repair or replacement performed at an authorized dealer, so long as the failure is caused by wastegate fork head or link pin corrosion.⁴

If your Generation 3 vehicle was already older than 8.5 years on September 15, 2025, the extended coverage ran only until November 14, 2025, or 85,000 miles, whichever came first.²

Generation 1 and Generation 2 vehicles do not receive a warranty extension. Owners of those vehicles were eligible only for reimbursement on a past repair.

What This Settlement Does Not Cover

The settlement addresses the wastegate failure mechanism in the EA888 2.0-liter engine. A separate Audi safety recall (21H7, NHTSA Campaign 22V-178) that began in 2022 dealt with a different turbocharger problem, a blocked oil strainer, on 2013–2017 S6, S7, S8, A8, and RS7 models. Those vehicles and that defect are not part of this class action.⁶

What Happens Now

The case was terminated on December 8, 2025, and the settlement is in its payout phase. Payments to approved claimants will go out after any appeals are resolved; no active appeals have been publicly identified as of the case’s closure.² Questions about a filed claim, a VIN lookup, or the warranty extension go to JND Legal Administration at 1-855-779-6685 or info@TurboClassSettlement.com.³ If you own a Generation 3 vehicle and the turbo fails within the 8.5-year/85,000-mile window, take it to an authorized Volkswagen or Audi dealer and ask that the repair be handled under the extended warranty from the Kimball settlement.
