The First Conviction and the Defense Argument
Triplett was charged in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court before Judge Shirley Strickland Saffold. In September 2009 a jury convicted him of felonious assault with a repeat violent offender specification, but deadlocked on involuntary manslaughter, with all but one juror voting to convict on that count as well.8Cleveland.com. Triplett testified he acted to protect his sister after watching her get punched. His attorney, Rufus Sims, argued his actions fell under the legal defense of protecting another person.10News-Herald. The Appeal and 20-Year Retrial
In February 2011, the Eighth District Court of Appeals overturned the felonious assault conviction and ordered a new trial, finding that Judge Strickland Saffold had given “erroneous and confusing jury instructions” on defense of others.4People. At the October 2011 retrial, the jury convicted Triplett on both counts. He received a 20-year sentence, with an effective sentence date of November 3, 2011.5Cleveland 19 News. Retrial Convicts Cleveland Man in Fatal Punch1Ohio DRC. Offender Search – Walter Triplett
The Netflix Episode and Public Response
Season 6, Episode 3 of I Am a Killer, “Defense of Another,” was released January 8, 2025. Triplett described the night of the fight and maintained he would always choose to protect his sister. Waltonya also appeared, and detective Armelli disputed Triplett’s account, arguing he had no legal justification for punching Corrado.2MovieWeb. Much of the response focused on race. Triplett said his first jury included 11 white jurors out of 12 and his second jury was entirely white, in a city with a large Black population.2MovieWeb. Viewers Are Troubled Over This Shocking I Am a Killer Episode Viewers compared his 20-year term to the two-and-a-half-year sentence received by Jacob Dunne, a white defendant in England convicted after an unprovoked fatal punch. Bombik rejected accusations of racial bias, calling them “pure garbage” and saying the sentence reflected Triplett’s repeat violent offender status.4People. Walter Triplett Jr. Where Is He Now
