Warren Sapp’s lawsuit is a $20 million pre-suit notice of claim filed in December 2024 against the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office and Okeechobee County, Florida, alleging he was “maliciously and falsely arrested and illegally detained” during a February 2024 traffic stop.1WFLX. Why NFL Hall of Famer Warren Sapp Is Asking Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office for $20 Million Prosecutors dropped the criminal charge against him, and the sheriff’s own internal review identified several procedural failures by the deputies on scene.2WPTV. What Happened at the Traffic Stop
In February 2024, Sapp was traveling with a charity convoy of luxury vehicles that had left Miami to raise money for local causes.3Yahoo Sports. Warren Sapp Sends Clear Message Okeechobee County deputies clocked the convoy at speeds above 100 mph and pulled over one of the cars at a gas station. Sapp was not the driver.2WPTV. A crowd gathered as the stop dragged on, with the deputy unable to print a citation because of equipment failure. Sapp began speaking with the deputies and refused to give his name. Body camera footage captured a deputy telling him he was being detained for “interfering with an investigation.”1WFLX. Sheriff’s records state Sapp “continued to tense up and plant his feet to the ground” before being arrested. He was charged with obstruction without violence and held at the Okeechobee County Jail for roughly three hours before posting bond.4Lake Okeechobee News. Why the Criminal Charge Was Dropped
The State Attorney’s Office declined to prosecute. In a memo, Assistant State Attorney Ashley Albright wrote that although Sapp’s “intentional actions and statements were no doubt frustrating and annoying to the point of distracting the deputies, the strict requirements of the law will not support a conviction beyond a reasonable doubt.”1WFLX. An after-action report by Lieutenant Bryan Lowe of the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office then catalogued what the deputies had done wrong:
- Neither deputy told Sapp he was interfering with the stop or ordered him to step away. He was only told to “stop.”
- Deputies did not ensure their laptops and printers were working. The report said that when equipment cannot be fixed quickly, deputies should issue a handwritten citation or give a verbal warning and release the driver.
- Lieutenant Lowe wrote that continuing to interact with bystanders after a citation has been issued amounts to an “unlawful continuance of a traffic stop.”
- After placing Sapp in restraints, deputies never patted him down. Had they done so, the report noted, they could have found his identification, which “potentially could have changed the outcome of this situation.”
The internal report cut against the deputies’ justification for the arrest and gave Sapp’s attorneys material to build a civil rights claim on.2WPTV. Report Identifies Several Things That Could Have Been Handled Differently in Warren Sapp Arrest
The $20 Million Notice of Claim
In December 2024, Sapp’s attorney Ariel Mitchell filed a formal notice of claim seeking $20 million from the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office and the county.1WFLX. The claim alleges civil rights violations tied to the false arrest and unlawful detention. It also cites emotional distress, including that Sapp was unable to sleep after the incident and that his son’s birthday was “negatively affected.”1WFLX. Why NFL Hall of Famer Warren Sapp Is Asking Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office for $20 Million Mitchell publicly said the detention was based on “his race, the officers’ overinflated ego and the sheriffs’ lack of knowledge of the law, constitution and their civic duty.” Sapp himself said the case was “never about the money” and that he was looking for an apology.4Lake Okeechobee News. The Florida Sheriff’s Risk Management Fund responded with a $3,500 settlement offer, which Mitchell dismissed as “insulting.”3Yahoo Sports. Where the Case Stands
As of mid-2025, the $20 million claim has not been resolved and no formal lawsuit has been filed publicly. The matter remains at the pre-suit notice stage, with the six-month Florida waiting period now elapsed.3Yahoo Sports. A Separate Hollywood, Florida Case
Sapp is also facing an unrelated misdemeanor charge in Hollywood, Florida, that is not part of the Okeechobee claim. Beginning in March 2026, he had a series of recorded confrontations with staff and police at Hollywood City Hall while trying to access floors restricted to the public. In one exchange, a police lieutenant told Sapp he could not film inside an official police area; Sapp kept recording.6Local 10 News.
