Was Nancy Guthrie Found? Ransom Notes, Evidence, and Legal Outlook

Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of NBC “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie, has not been found. As of late June 2026, she remains missing after being taken from her home in the Catalina Foothills area of Tucson, Arizona, in the early morning hours of February 1, 2026. No arrests have been made, no suspect has been publicly named, and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department says the case is active, not cold.¹

One ransom note received a week after she vanished claimed she had died and was “buried with nature now.” Investigators consider the note a legitimate communication from her abductor, but her body has not been recovered, and law enforcement has not confirmed her death.²

What Investigators Believe Happened

Guthrie was dropped off at her home by her son-in-law at 9:48 p.m. on Saturday, January 31, 2026, after a family dinner. Her garage door closed two minutes later. Those were the last confirmed signs she was safe inside.³

At 1:47 a.m. her Nest doorbell camera disconnected. At 2:12 a.m. the camera’s software detected a person, but no video saved to the cloud. At 2:28 a.m. the app linked to her pacemaker disconnected from her phone, which investigators believe may mark the moment she was physically removed from the residence. Her phone, wallet, car, and daily medications were all left behind.⁴⁵

Family members grew concerned when she missed church that morning. They discovered her missing at 11:56 a.m. and called 911 seven minutes later.³

By February 3, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department had confirmed signs of forced entry and described “specific evidence” of a nighttime kidnapping. Authorities said the home was a crime scene and that they did not believe the incident was a robbery or home invasion.⁵

The Ransom Notes and What They Said

The abductor communicated at least twice. On February 2, a note sent to local news outlets demanded $6 million in bitcoin by 5 p.m. on February 9. It contained details only someone who had been inside the home could know, including an Apple Watch with a white band on the bedroom floor and a broken back porch light. Savannah Guthrie and her siblings publicly said they would pay. The deadline passed without further contact from the sender.⁶⁷

A second note followed on February 6. It said Nancy Guthrie had died, claimed the death was unintended, and stated she was “buried with nature now.” It made no demand for payment in exchange for her body.²

Investigators believe both notes came from the same source. They did not originate from the same IP address, but both used the same type of secure server to mask the sender. Law enforcement asked media outlets to withhold the second note’s contents for months so that details known only to the kidnapper could be used to vet suspects, and to keep tips coming in from a public that did not yet know she had reportedly been killed. The second note’s existence was publicly reported in late June 2026. Savannah Guthrie said her family believed the notes were authentic.⁸⁷

A separate ransom-style message was sent to TMZ demanding a similar amount in a different cryptocurrency; authorities described it as “highly sophisticated.”⁹ At least one person was arrested for sending a fraudulent ransom demand meant to profit from the case; that person had no connection to the abduction.¹⁰

What the Physical Evidence Shows

Blood was found on the front porch and inside the home. DNA testing confirmed the blood on the porch belonged to Nancy Guthrie. One expert who reviewed the scene described what appeared to be a “drip trail” and theorized she may have suffered an injury such as a bloody nose during the abduction.³¹¹

The FBI, working with Google, recovered footage from the disconnected Nest camera. It showed a masked, armed individual approaching the door and attempting to block the camera, first with a hand and then with a piece of shrubbery from the yard. The suspect was described as male, roughly 5-foot-9 to 5-foot-10, average build, wearing a ski mask, gloves, a jacket, and long pants, and carrying a black 25-liter Ozark Trail Hiker Pack backpack sold exclusively at Walmart. Security analysts who reviewed the footage noted the suspect’s unhurried pace and the awkward placement of a mismatched gun holster as signs the person likely lacked professional training.¹²¹³

Investigators recovered DNA from the property that did not belong to Guthrie or to people known to have been in close contact with her. Multiple gloves were found in the surrounding area, including one about 1.5 miles from the home and a pair recovered around two miles away. None of the DNA from those items produced a match in the federal CODIS database. One glove’s DNA was ultimately traced to a local restaurant worker who was cleared.¹⁴¹⁵¹²

By May 2026, Sheriff Chris Nanos said investigators had “workable” DNA but acknowledged the samples may contain a mixture of multiple people’s genetic material. The department said it was exploring forensic investigative genetic genealogy, which uses public genealogy databases when CODIS returns no match.¹⁶¹⁵

Leads That Have Not Produced Her

Several publicized leads have not resulted in finding Guthrie.

On February 10, deputies detained a 36-year-old delivery driver named Carlos Alfredo Palazuelos during a traffic stop near the U.S.-Mexico border in Rio Rico, Arizona, after a tip suggested Guthrie was at a related residence. He was questioned for several hours and released early on February 11 without charges. He denied any involvement, telling reporters, “I hope they get the suspect, because I’m not it.”¹⁷¹⁸

On February 16, Sheriff Nanos officially cleared all members of the Guthrie family as suspects and called online speculation about their involvement “cruel.”¹⁸

In May 2026, a YouTuber named Alec Wysopal found human remains near a dry river bank roughly five miles from Guthrie’s home. The University of Arizona’s Anthropology Department determined the bones were prehistoric, believed to be up to 1,000 years old and belonging to a Native American individual. The remains were transferred to the Tohono O’odham Nation and declared unrelated to the case.¹⁹

In June 2026, a Mexican volunteer organization called Buscando Corazones de Nogales Sonora received an anonymous tip that Guthrie was buried in a shallow grave near Nogales, Mexico. Volunteers conducted searches, including one about four miles south of the Arizona-Mexico border, and uncovered 25 unmarked graves. None was connected to Guthrie. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said it was aware of the effort but had not been contacted by Mexican authorities.²⁰²¹

The Reward and How to Submit Tips

The FBI initially offered $50,000 and then doubled it to $100,000. On February 24, Savannah Guthrie announced the family was offering up to $1 million for information leading to her mother’s recovery, with no requirement for an arrest or conviction. The family had waited four weeks after being advised that a large early reward could overwhelm investigators with false leads and provoke the abductor.²²²³

The combined reward has since grown past $1.2 million with contributions from the FBI, the 88-CRIME program, and the family. After the family’s announcement, the FBI reported more than 750 “credible tips” out of roughly 23,000 tips collected since the investigation began.¹⁶²³

Can a Case Move Forward Without a Body?

Because the second ransom note claimed Guthrie was dead but no remains have been recovered, legal analysts have weighed in on whether a prosecution could proceed. Former federal prosecutor Neama Rahmani told NewsNation a murder case could be brought, arguing a jury could “reasonably infer death from the circumstances” given Guthrie’s age, her dependence on daily heart medication, and the length of her disappearance. Rahmani noted that under felony murder laws, a person involved in a dangerous felony such as kidnapping can be held liable for a resulting death without a specific intent to kill.²⁴

Criminal defense attorney Joshua G. Schiffer told Newsweek that while a missing body does not bar prosecution, as of mid-2026 “it doesn’t look like the Nancy Guthrie disappearance would be suitable for a prosecution right now,” pointing to how much of the investigation remains confidential.²⁵

For now, the search continues. DNA profiles from unknown individuals recovered at the home have been entered into databases, and no publicly reported match to a named suspect has come back.¹⁸
