Wendy Osefo’s Charges: Counts, Evidence, and Defense

Wendy Osefo, a cast member of Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Potomac, faces 16 criminal counts in Maryland tied to what Carroll County prosecutors describe as a staged home burglary and a roughly $450,000 insurance fraud scheme. The charges against Wendy Osefo include seven felony counts of insurance fraud, eight misdemeanor counts of conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, and one misdemeanor count of making a false statement to a police officer.1Page Six. The Counts She Is Facing

A Carroll County grand jury handed up indictments against Wendy Osefo and her husband Edward “Eddie” Osefo on October 9, 2025. Wendy’s 16 charges break down into three groups: seven felonies for insurance fraud, eight misdemeanors for conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, and one misdemeanor for making a false statement to a police officer.1Page Six. What the Charges Carry Under Maryland Law

Under Maryland Insurance Code § 27-408, insurance fraud involving $300 or more is a felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000 per count. Fines under the statute are mandatory and cannot be suspended, and the law permits consecutive sentencing, meaning penalties on multiple counts can be stacked rather than served at the same time.3Justia. Maryland Insurance Code § 27-408 With seven felony counts, Wendy Osefo’s theoretical maximum exposure on the fraud charges alone is substantial, though actual sentences in Maryland rarely approach statutory maximums.

What Prosecutors Say Happened

On April 7, 2024, Carroll County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the Osefo residence on Turnberry Court after Eddie Osefo reported a burglary. The couple told investigators they had just returned from a vacation in Jamaica, where they stayed from April 2 through April 7, and found their master bedroom and closets ransacked. They reported approximately 80 items stolen, including jewelry, designer handbags, clothing, and shoes, with a claimed value above $200,000.2WBAL-TV. Wendy Osefo Arrested on Fraud Charges

The couple said the burglar entered through a second-story window, but investigators found no signs of forced entry. There were no ladders, footprints, or fingerprints, and deck furniture beneath the alleged entry point was undisturbed. Indoor, outdoor, and neighbor surveillance cameras captured no suspicious activity, and the home’s active ADT alarm registered no motion inside the house during the trip.4CBS News Baltimore. The day after the report, Eddie Osefo filed claims with three insurers: Travelers Insurance, Jewelers Mutual Insurance, and Homesite Insurance Company. Prosecutors allege he did not disclose to Homesite or Jewelers Mutual that he was simultaneously filing with Travelers, which they treat as a central element of the fraud. Travelers paid $25,380, including $4,500 for Wendy Osefo’s diamond anniversary band; Homesite denied its claim; the outcome of the Jewelers Mutual claim has not been publicly reported.5WBAL Radio. The Evidence Behind the Charges

Several specific findings pushed investigators from doubt to indictment.

Investigators obtained an email Eddie sent to Wendy that prosecutors treat as a near-admission. In it, he asked whether there were “additional high-value items we can add to this inventory listing (i.e., Chanel shoes, etc.)? I’m trying to get the total to exceed $423,000, which is our policy maximum.”2WBAL-TV. Wendy Osefo Arrested on Fraud Charges

They also determined that more than $20,000 worth of supposedly stolen items had actually been returned to retailers for full refunds. Some of those returns happened within 90 days of a 2018 purchase, years before the reported burglary.4CBS News Baltimore. Real Housewives Star, Husband Arrested in Maryland

The diamond anniversary band drew particular scrutiny. Eddie first told Travelers that both he and Wendy were wearing their bands during the burglary, then two days later amended the claim to say Wendy’s ring was missing. Travelers paid out $4,500 for it. Investigators then found an Instagram photo dated April 27, 2024, three weeks after the alleged theft, showing Wendy wearing a diamond band with the same distinctive V-shaped setting as the one reported stolen. The couple had also tried to claim the ring from more than one insurer.5WBAL Radio. Wendy Osefo and Husband Indicted in Insurance Fraud Case

When police executed a search warrant during the October 2025 arrest, they recovered at least 15 items from the original theft report inside the home. They also found 67 credit and debit cards tucked into four luxury wallets, one of them a Chanel wallet that had itself been reported stolen.7The Banner. The Prosecution’s Motive Theory

Prosecutors have worked to make the couple’s finances part of the case. At a December 19, 2025 hearing, Carroll County deputy state’s attorney Melissa Hockensmith argued the state needed the couple’s financial records to establish motive, characterizing the Osefos as having “very little money” and saying their spending patterns explain why they would fabricate the burglary.7The Banner. Prosecutors alleged the couple holds roughly 40 credit and debit cards under their own names, business names, and the aliases “Pam Oliver” and “Eddie Hennessy,” describing the aliases as a “deliberate attempt to mask their identity” and the card volume as evidence of a “pattern of excessive spending.”8People. What the Defense Says

Wendy and Eddie Osefo are represented by attorneys Jeremy Eldridge, Clarissa Lindsey, and Joseph Murtha. Their defense has challenged both the facts and the conduct of the investigation.

The lawyers argue Carroll County police failed to properly investigate the original burglary despite “clear signs of a break-in,” and that the couple cooperated but received no updates for more than 18 months. They call the state’s approach “highly irregular,” saying the fraud investigation only began after charges were filed, which they say “raises serious concerns about motive and fairness.”11Fox Baltimore. Osefo Attorneys Allege Bias in Burglary Investigation

On the alias allegations, the defense denies the couple ever used fake names on financial applications, saying “Pam Oliver” and “Eddie Hennessy” were used only for package deliveries to protect their privacy as public figures. Eldridge said there is “no evidence” to support the prosecution’s claims about the couple’s finances.12theGrio. The defense has also framed the prosecution as selective, arguing the Osefos are being treated differently from other reality television figures who have been burglarized after sharing travel details online.11Fox Baltimore.
