Ankle monitors look like a small, dark plastic box about the size of a deck of cards, strapped to the lower leg just above the ankle bone. Most are black or charcoal gray, weigh five to eight ounces, and have rounded edges and a smooth, seamless housing. Under loose pants they’re mostly hidden. Under shorts, a skirt, or anything tapered at the ankle, they’re clearly visible.
Size, Shape, and Color
A typical GPS ankle monitor measures roughly 4 inches wide, 2.5 inches tall, and about 1.5 inches deep. The BI LOC8 XT, one of the most widely deployed models in the federal system, weighs 7 ounces and has a curved, low-profile shape designed to follow the contour of the ankle.1BI Incorporated. BI LOC8 XT Ankle Bracelet and Electronic Monitoring Device Alcohol monitoring bracelets like the SCRAMx are more square, about 2.8 inches on each side and around 5.8 ounces, with stainless steel and plastic housing instead of all-plastic construction.
Across manufacturers the colors run almost exclusively black or charcoal gray. The outer casing is impact-resistant plastic or composite, with rounded edges and no external screws or seams that a wearer could pry open. The surface is smooth. There is no screen on the ankle unit itself, no display of information a passerby could read.
The Strap
The housing connects to a strap that wraps around the ankle and locks with a tamper-proof clasp. The strap is usually black to match the unit and hypoallergenic, since it sits against skin around the clock. It’s adjustable at installation so it fits snugly without cutting off circulation, but the wearer can’t resize or remove it. The clasp requires a specialized tool held by the supervising officer.
Many models embed a fiber optic cable inside the strap. Cutting or stretching it interrupts a light signal running through the cable and triggers an alert.1BI Incorporated. How the Three Types Look Different
Not every ankle monitor is doing the same job, and the function shapes the appearance.
GPS Monitors
GPS monitors are what most people picture. They’re the bulkiest of the three because they pack GPS receivers, cellular transmitters, motion sensors, and a rechargeable battery into one ankle-worn unit.2United States Courts. How Location Monitoring Works Some include a built-in speaker so a supervising officer can speak to the wearer through the device.1BI Incorporated. BI LOC8 XT Ankle Bracelet and Electronic Monitoring Device If the speaker is present, you’ll see a small grille on the housing.
Radio Frequency (RF) Monitors
RF monitors are smaller and lighter. The ankle piece is just a short-range transmitter that pings a base unit plugged in at the wearer’s home.2United States Courts. How Location Monitoring Works Without GPS hardware or the battery needed to power it, the ankle unit can be slimmer. The base station itself is roughly the size of a router and sits in the home, not on the person.3Sentinel Offender Services. RF Electronic Monitoring
Alcohol Monitoring Bracelets
Alcohol bracelets like SCRAM look noticeably different because they carry a flat sensor pad on the underside that sits flush against the skin. The pad samples the vapor that escapes through skin and measures alcohol in it.4SCRAM Systems. Transdermal Alcohol Measurement Literature Review That sensor gives the bracelet a thicker profile at the point of skin contact than a standard GPS unit. Hybrid models combine alcohol monitoring with GPS tracking, and these are the largest ankle monitors in use.
Lights and Signals
Every ankle monitor has small LED lights on the housing. Exact color coding varies by manufacturer, but the pattern is consistent: green means charged and functioning normally, while red or amber means the battery is getting low. A rapidly flashing red light with a vibration or audible tone typically means the battery is critical.
Many newer models vibrate like a phone, which lets the device alert the wearer silently in a workplace or classroom. Some emit beeps for events like a zone boundary violation or a tamper alert. The BI LOC8 XT includes vibration pulses designed for hearing-impaired wearers.1BI Incorporated. What It Looks Like Under Clothing
Under boot-cut jeans, khakis, or any pants with a wider leg opening, a GPS monitor is mostly invisible. The bulge is there if someone looks closely at the ankle, but it doesn’t draw attention. Under fitted pants, joggers, or anything tapered at the ankle, the outline shows. Shorts and skirts make the device fully visible. Some wearers buy neoprene sleeves that cover the unit so it resembles an athletic ankle brace, though the squared-off shape of the housing still tends to show through.
The device isn’t quiet in the way jewelry is quiet. The housing has edges. It knocks against hard surfaces, catches on bedding, and shows a defined rectangle through thin fabric. From across a room, under the right clothes, most people won’t notice one. In close contact, or when the wearer sits down and a pant leg rides up, the device is unmistakable.
How It Sits Against the Skin
Because the strap stays against the skin around the clock, wearers often develop visible marks underneath. In a study of 100 people wearing the SCRAMx bracelet, 58 percent reported skin marks and 54 percent reported irritation, though most rated the severity as mild.5PubMed Central. Experiences with SCRAMx Alcohol Monitoring Technology in 100 Alcohol Treatment Outpatients More than half said the bracelet interfered with their clothing choices. The weight itself is modest, five to seven ounces, but a device fixed in the same spot for weeks creates friction, especially during sleep or exercise.
Ankle monitors are not designed to blend in. They function as both a tracking tool and a visible condition of release. Up close they announce themselves. At a conversational distance, under long pants, they usually don’t.
