Dail Dinwiddie, a 23-year-old University of South Carolina graduate student, disappeared in the early morning hours of September 24, 1992, after a U2 concert in Columbia, South Carolina, and more than three decades later no one knows what happened to her. She was last seen walking alone out of a Five Points bar around 2:00 a.m. Despite extensive searches, thousands of tips, DNA work, and scrutiny of at least one convicted serial killer, the case is unsolved and remains open.1Columbia Police Department. 30 Year Anniversary of Dail Dinwiddie’s Disappearance
The Night She Vanished
On the evening of September 23, 1992, Dinwiddie went with friends to U2’s “Zoo TV” concert at Williams-Brice Stadium. Afterward, the group headed to Jungle Jim’s, a college bar at 724 Harden Street in the Five Points entertainment district near the USC campus.2The State. Jungle Jim’s Five Points Property The neighborhood was packed with concertgoers. Around 2:00 a.m., Dinwiddie became separated from her friends, who assumed she had found a ride home.1Columbia Police Department. 30 Year Anniversary of Dail Dinwiddie’s Disappearance
A bouncer at Jungle Jim’s was the last known person to see her. She spoke with him, left her purse behind at the bar, and was then seen walking north on Harden Street toward the intersection with Green Street. She never returned.3Charley Project. Dail Boxley Dinwiddie
Her father reported her missing at 8:30 that morning after finding her room undisturbed. Police treated the case as a kidnapping from the beginning, saying it was completely out of character for her to leave without telling anyone. She stood five feet tall and weighed roughly 96 to 98 pounds, with light brown hair and brown eyes, and she was wearing a forest green pullover, faded jeans, and either brown boots or white Nike sneakers, with a bright blue L.L. Bean jacket tied around her waist.3Charley Project. Dail Boxley Dinwiddie
What Investigators Have Done
The Columbia Police Department led the case with help from the Richland County Sheriff’s Department. Officers searched wooded areas, ponds, rivers, and wells across the region and found no trace of her. The case drew national and international attention early. U2 displayed Dinwiddie’s photograph during subsequent concerts on their tour.4WIS-TV. What Happened to Dail Dinwiddie
Thousands of tips came in over the years. None produced a concrete lead. Lead investigator Jessica Nowlin of the Columbia Police Department has pointed to one basic limitation: 1992 was before the era of widespread surveillance cameras. “It’s not like it is now, where there are cameras everywhere,” she told WIS-TV. “There’s nothing down there.”4WIS-TV. What Happened to Dail Dinwiddie
In 2006, investigators re-examining old evidence found a strand of hair on Dinwiddie’s hairbrush and used it to build her own DNA profile, which was entered into a national database. Until then they had only had DNA samples from her parents.5WIS-TV. DNA Profile of Missing Columbia Woman Created 14 Years Later In August 2012, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division forensic artist Debbie Goff produced an age-progression image showing what Dinwiddie might look like at 43, built from photos of her parents and siblings. Columbia Police Chief Randy Scott, Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott, and the Dinwiddie family unveiled it together, hoping it would break what authorities called an investigative impasse.6WIS-TV. 20 Years Ago Today Dail Dinwiddie Disappeared
Suspects and Theories
Reinaldo Rivera
Reinaldo Javier Rivera was a USC student in 1992 and was later convicted in Georgia for the 2000 murder of 21-year-old Army Sergeant Marni Glista, along with multiple rapes and aggravated assaults. He also confessed to killing two young women in Aiken County, South Carolina, in 1999.7FindLaw. Rivera v. State, Georgia Supreme Court At his 2004 sentencing, he told the court he would “likely kill again” if given the chance and asked for the death penalty, which the jury imposed.8WIS-TV. N. Augusta Man Sentenced to Death for Murder
Investigators looked at Rivera because he was in Columbia in 1992 and had a documented pattern of violence against young women. He never admitted any involvement in Dinwiddie’s case, and no physical evidence has ever been found linking him to her.4WIS-TV. What Happened to Dail Dinwiddie
The 2025 Campbell and Hutto Tip
In May 2025, FITSNews reported a theory advanced by a man named Paul Seay. Seay said North Carolina death row inmate James Adolph Campbell told him in 2006 that he had hired Terry Lee Hutto to abduct Campbell’s ex-wife, Dawn Michelle Atkins, in September 1992. The theory holds that Hutto went looking for Atkins in the Five Points bars and took Dinwiddie by mistake because the two women looked similar, then killed her and left her body in a field in Rowan County, North Carolina.9FITSNews. Both named men have violent records in the right time frame. Campbell is on death row in North Carolina for the September 1992 murder and rape of Katherine Price, whose body was found in Rowan County.10FindLaw. Campbell v. Polk, Fourth Circuit Hutto is serving a life sentence in South Carolina for the murder of Nadine Poole on September 25, 1992, one day after Dinwiddie disappeared.11WIS-TV. The Richland County Sheriff’s Department confirmed it followed up on the tip. Multiple law enforcement sources described it as a dead end, saying no evidence has surfaced that Campbell and Hutto ever knew each other. As of late 2025, Seay said prosecutors had not reached any immunity or clemency agreement with Campbell for information about Dinwiddie’s remains.9FITSNews. Where the Case Stands
Dinwiddie’s case is still open and active. The Charley Project lists her as “Endangered Missing,” and both the Columbia Police Department and the Richland County Sheriff’s Department’s cold case unit continue to work it.3Charley Project.
