What Happened to Julia Ormond? Lawsuit, CAA, and Disney Settlement

Julia Ormond, the British actress who starred in Legends of the Fall, First Knight, and Sabrina in the mid-1990s, stepped away from leading Hollywood roles after what she has described as a 1995 sexual assault by producer Harvey Weinstein. In the years since, she built a second career as a human rights advocate focused on human trafficking, and in October 2023 she sued Weinstein, her former talent agency CAA, Disney, and Miramax. Disney and Miramax settled in 2025. Her case against CAA is still moving toward trial. What happened to Julia Ormond, in short, is that she traded the A-list for advocacy and, decades later, the courtroom.

The 1995 Allegation That Reshaped Her Career

Ormond was earning about $3.5 million per film in late 1995 and had just signed with CAA agents Bryan Lourd and Kevin Huvane. The agency had negotiated a two-year first-look production deal for her with Miramax, along with a company-provided apartment in New York. According to her lawsuit, Weinstein insisted on continuing a business dinner at that apartment in December 1995, then stripped naked and forced her to perform oral sex on him.¹²

She says she told Lourd and Huvane, and that they were not surprised. The complaint alleges they discouraged her from going to police, warning she would not be believed and that Weinstein would damage her career. They allegedly shared the “going rate” for prior settlements involving Weinstein to suggest that reporting was not worth the trouble.³

What Happened to Her Acting Career

The lawsuit describes swift professional consequences. Miramax terminated Ormond’s production contract and stopped developing her projects, including one called West With the Night. CAA reassigned her to a less experienced agent and distanced itself. She eventually left the agency.⁴

When Ormond asked her agents to keep Weinstein away from the Copenhagen set of her 1997 film Smilla’s Sense of Snow, she says they declined to intervene. Weinstein told her she was “fucked at the company,” according to the complaint, and began retaliating. She calls the damage to her career “catastrophic.” Her later credits shifted primarily to television, including Temple Grandin (2010), Witches of East End (2013), and The Walking Dead: World Beyond (2020).¹

She has described her decades of silence as a trap driven by fear of retaliation. Speaking to Rolling Stone, she said the impact on her career and psyche had been “massive,” and credited the #MeToo movement with helping her decide to come forward. “I don’t want to participate in it as a hypocrite anymore,” she said.⁴

Her Human Rights Work

Much of what Ormond has done outside acting has been advocacy. In 2005, she was appointed the first Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime focused on trafficking and slavery.⁵

In 2007, she founded ASSET, the Alliance to Stop Slavery and End Trafficking, a nonprofit focused on supply chain transparency. ASSET was instrumental in passing California’s Transparency in Supply Chains Act, which took effect in January 2012 and requires major retailers and manufacturers to disclose their efforts to eliminate slavery and trafficking from their supply chains. The group also collaborated on provisions in the United Kingdom’s 2015 Modern Slavery Act. Her recognition for this work includes the World Economic Forum’s Crystal Award and honors from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, Women for Women International, and the Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking.⁶

The 2023 Lawsuit

Ormond filed her lawsuit in New York State Supreme Court on October 4, 2023, naming Weinstein, Creative Artists Agency, The Walt Disney Company, and Miramax.⁷ The claims are tailored to each defendant. Weinstein is sued for sexual battery. CAA faces claims for negligence and breach of fiduciary duty, based on allegations that the agency knew of Weinstein’s predatory conduct but failed to warn her and discouraged her from reporting. Disney and Miramax were sued for negligent supervision and retention; Disney owned Miramax at the time, having bought it in 1993.⁸

The suit was made possible by New York’s Adult Survivors Act, signed by Governor Kathy Hochul on November 24, 2022. The law opened a one-year window for adult survivors of sexual assault to bring civil claims that the statute of limitations would otherwise bar. Ormond’s case was one of several high-profile filings before the window closed.⁹

The Disney and Miramax Settlement

All four defendants tried to have the case thrown out. In August 2024, New York Judge Suzanne Adams denied the motions to dismiss filed by CAA, Disney, and Miramax. The court found that Ormond had adequately alleged Disney executives Jeffrey Katzenberg and Michael Eisner negligently supervised Weinstein, and rejected Disney’s argument that it was not his employer, noting Weinstein reported directly to Eisner.¹⁰¹¹

In July 2025, Disney and Miramax settled with Ormond under sealed terms and exited the case. Reports put Disney’s payment at about $5.75 million and the total settlement at roughly $6 million. Neither company admitted wrongdoing.¹²¹³

Where the CAA Case Stands

CAA has been the most combative defendant. It denies all claims and points to an independent review by the law firm Paul Weiss that it says found no merit to Ormond’s allegations. In its filings, CAA has argued that Ormond had a preexisting relationship with Weinstein and had previously experienced his harassment before signing with the agency, so it cannot be blamed for failing to warn her.¹³

On August 21, 2025, a New York appellate court unanimously upheld the denial of CAA’s motion to dismiss. The court found Ormond had sufficiently alleged that CAA owed her both a fiduciary duty and a duty of care, that the agency had notice of Weinstein’s “propensity for sexually assaultive behavior,” and that a jury could reasonably find CAA’s failure to warn or protect her “proximately caused” her injuries. The court rejected CAA’s argument that Weinstein’s criminal act was a “superseding cause” that would relieve the agency of responsibility, reasoning that the criminal conduct was precisely the danger the agency should have guarded against.¹⁴¹⁵

The ruling has consequences beyond Ormond’s case. It establishes that talent agencies can be found to have a “special relationship” with clients based on trust and confidence, creating an affirmative duty to provide accurate information and warn about known dangers in the industry.¹⁶

As of mid-2026, the lawsuit is still active against CAA and Weinstein. No trial date has been publicly reported. CAA continues to deny wrongdoing and maintains the suit is baseless.¹²

Weinstein’s Criminal Cases

Ormond’s suit is civil and separate from the criminal cases against Weinstein. He was convicted in New York in March 2020 and sentenced to 23 years in prison for rape and a felony sex crime, but that conviction was later overturned and led to retrials.¹⁷ In 2025 he was convicted on a single count of criminal sexual act involving another accuser. A separate third-degree rape charge involving Jessica Mann ended in a mistrial in May 2026 after the jury deadlocked, and a New York judge dismissed the charge on June 25, 2026, after the Manhattan district attorney’s office declined to pursue a fourth trial. Weinstein is awaiting sentencing in September 2026 for the 2025 conviction.¹⁸
