What Happened to Selena? Murder, Trial, and Parole Denial

Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, the 23-year-old Tejano superstar known simply as Selena, was shot and killed on March 31, 1995, at a Days Inn motel in Corpus Christi, Texas, by Yolanda Saldívar, the president of her fan club and manager of her clothing boutiques whom the singer had just fired over suspected embezzlement. What happened to Selena has been asked and answered many times since: Saldívar was convicted of first-degree murder later that year and sentenced to life in prison, and in March 2025, on her first eligibility, the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles denied her release.¹

The Killing at the Days Inn

Yolanda Saldívar founded the official Selena fan club in 1991 and worked her way into the singer’s business operations, eventually managing the boutiques and gaining access to business checking accounts.² Fan club members complained they had paid dues and received nothing; employees said paychecks were missing.³

Selena’s father and manager, Abraham Quintanilla Jr., concluded Saldívar was stealing. On March 9, 1995, he confronted her in a meeting with Selena and her sister Suzette and told her he planned to report her to police. The next day, she was banned from company offices. Selena’s husband, Chris Pérez, later testified that he and Selena had removed Saldívar from the checking accounts because “there were a lot of things coming up unaccounted for, and we couldn’t get an explanation.”³

Selena still needed the boutique’s bank statements and financial records, and Saldívar had them. She met Saldívar at the Corpus Christi motel on the night of March 30 to collect the paperwork, realized when she got home that documents were still missing, and went back the next morning.³

As Selena was leaving room 158 on the morning of March 31, Saldívar shot her in the back with a .38-caliber revolver she had purchased days earlier.⁴² Bleeding heavily, Selena ran toward the motel lobby. Front desk clerk Shauna Bella testified that Selena collapsed and told her, “Yolanda. Room 158,” then pleaded, “Please lock the door. Yolanda’s going to shoot me.”⁵ She was dead before she reached the hospital. The Nueces County Medical Examiner’s Office listed the cause of death as hemorrhaging from a perforating gunshot wound to the chest.⁶

The Standoff and Arrest

After the shooting, Saldívar climbed into her red pickup truck in the motel parking lot, put a cocked revolver to her own head, and told police she wanted to kill herself. The standoff lasted about nine and a half hours.⁷ Tape recordings captured her repeatedly saying, “I want to kill myself,” and at one point, “I didn’t mean to do it. I didn’t mean to kill anybody.”¹ Officers testified that she kept her finger on the trigger with the hammer cocked throughout, and clearly knew how the weapon worked.⁸ She eventually surrendered to a hostage negotiation team.

The Trial and Life Sentence

Because of the publicity, the trial was moved from Corpus Christi to Houston.¹⁹²¹⁰

Saldívar took the stand and testified that she had intended to kill herself, not Selena, and that the gun misfired.¹ The jury rejected that account. On October 23, 1995, she was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years.⁴

Appeals

Saldívar raised seventeen points of error on appeal, arguing among other things that the prosecution had struck jurors on the basis of race, that her written statement during the standoff should have been suppressed because she had asked for a lawyer, that prosecutors failed to disclose a witness’s prior theft conviction, and that testimony about the embezzlement should not have been admitted. The Texas Court of Appeals for the 14th District rejected every one of them in an October 1998 decision and affirmed the life sentence. On the withheld impeachment evidence, the court agreed prosecutors had breached their disclosure duty under Brady v. Maryland, but ruled the omission would not have changed the outcome.⁹¹¹ Later appeals have also been rejected.¹

Parole Denied in 2025

Saldívar became eligible for parole consideration on March 30, 2025, after serving the mandatory 30 years of her life sentence. Three days before that date, a three-member panel of the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles denied her release.¹² The board cited the nature of the offense, finding the crime “has elements of brutality, violence, assaultive behavior or conscious selection of victim’s vulnerability indicating a conscious disregard for the lives, safety, or property of others, such that the offender poses a continuing threat to public safety.”¹³

The Quintanilla family and Chris Pérez released a joint statement saying, “While nothing can bring Selena back, this decision reaffirms that justice continues to stand for the beautiful life that was taken from us and from millions of fans around the world far too soon.” Selena’s brother, A.B. Quintanilla, separately said he believes Saldívar should spend the rest of her life in prison.¹⁴ Saldívar’s next parole review is scheduled for March 2030.¹⁵

Where Yolanda Saldívar Is Now

Saldívar is held at the Patrick L. O’Daniel Unit in Gatesville, Texas, a Texas Department of Criminal Justice facility, where she has been kept in protective custody, segregated from the general population, because of the notoriety of the case. She has also filed multiple civil rights complaints alleging mistreatment in prison.¹

In a 2024 Oxygen documentary titled Selena & Yolanda: The Secrets Between Them, Saldívar spoke publicly in what appears to be one of her first extended interviews, saying, “I was convicted by public opinion even before my trial started,” and claiming she knows Selena’s “secrets” that people “deserve to know.”¹⁶ She continues to insist the shooting was an accident, a claim former lead prosecutor Carlos Valdez has publicly rejected.¹⁰

Selena’s Legacy Since 1995

At the time of her death, Selena was on the verge of releasing her first English-language album, a crossover many in the industry believed would have placed her among the biggest pop stars in the world.¹⁰ Her cultural reach has only grown since. Then-Governor George W. Bush declared April 16 “Selena Day” in Texas in 1995.¹⁷ A life-sized bronze statue by H.W. “Buddy” Tatum Jr. was dedicated at the Mirador de la Flor memorial on the Corpus Christi bayfront in 1997 and continues to draw tens of thousands of visitors each year.¹⁸ In October 2024, Selena was posthumously awarded the National Medal of Arts, accepted at the White House by her sister Suzette.¹⁹ In April 2025, Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz of Texas introduced the Selena Commemorative Coin Act (H.R. 2834), which would direct the U.S. Mint to issue a coin in her honor.²⁰

The 30th anniversary brought a new documentary, Selena y Los Dinos, directed by Isabel Castro and built around home movies filmed by Suzette Quintanilla. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2025, won a special jury prize for archival storytelling, and screened at SXSW; Netflix was reported to be negotiating distribution rights worth $6 million to $7 million.²¹ A new exhibition opened at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles in January 2026. Her music, image, and story are now taught in college Latinx and gender studies programs, and artists from Becky G to Karol G to Beyoncé have cited her as an influence.²²
