Since her husband Kyle Jacobs died by suicide in February 2023, what happened to Kellie Pickler is largely a story of grief, retreat, and a prolonged court fight with her late husband’s parents over his estate. The former American Idol finalist sold the Nashville home she shared with Jacobs, lived quietly out of the spotlight for most of three years, and in 2025 won a key court ruling in the dispute with her former in-laws. In May 2026, she returned to the Idol stage for the first major performance of her comeback.

Pickler went nearly silent in the months that followed. She broke that silence in August 2023 with a short statement to People, quoting advice she said her husband had given her: “One of the most beautiful lessons my husband taught me was in a moment of a crisis, if you don’t know what to do, ‘Do nothing, just be still.’ I have chosen to heed his advice.”3Billboard. The Court Fight With Kyle Jacobs’ Parents
The defining chapter of Pickler’s life since her husband’s death has been an estate dispute with his parents, Reed and Sharon Jacobs. Pickler declined to serve as administrator of Kyle’s estate, and his parents stepped in as co-administrators.7Taste of Country. The disputed property includes an extensive gun collection and gun safe, watches, cuff links, guitars, a grand piano, a viola, a sword, electronics including a work laptop and hard drives, school awards, and baseball card albums.8Taste of Country. Why Kellie Pickler Is in a Court Battle
She filed her own lawsuit alleging that Reed and Sharon Jacobs entered her home after Kyle’s death and removed personal property without her permission. She asked the court to order the co-administrators to identify exactly what they had taken. The Jacobs responded that Pickler had invited them in and set the items aside herself, and they asked the court to dismiss her petition.10New York Post. The Subpoena Ruling in November 2025
To force the return of the disputed items, the Jacobs parents served a subpoena on Pickler. When she had not complied by March 2025, they asked a judge to hold her in contempt.8Taste of Country. On November 25, 2025, a Tennessee judge dismissed the subpoena, calling it “unusual on its face” because the items demanded were “numerous and, in some instances, large/heavy items of tangible personal property” rather than documents that could be easily produced. The judge also found that because the Jacobs had never filed a formal complaint or petition against Pickler within the estate administration case, the subpoena was “void and unenforceable.”7Taste of Country. In a separate move, the Jacobs parents also subpoenaed Harpeth Memorial Gardens Funeral Home and Cremation Center for records about Kyle’s cremation, any personal effects he had when delivered to the facility, and documentation of any items cremated with him. The funeral home had not complied as of early 2025, and no ruling on that subpoena has been reported.12In Touch Weekly. Kellie Pickler’s Former In-Laws Issue Subpoena Over Son’s Cremation
Pickler’s Move to Remove the Administrators
In May 2025, Pickler filed an amended petition to have Reed and Sharon Jacobs removed as co-administrators of the estate and to be named the sole heir and beneficiary.13Taste of Country. Her Return to Performing
Pickler’s first public performance after Jacobs’ death came on April 22, 2024, at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, in a tribute concert honoring Patsy Cline. She told the audience, “I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was not incredibly nervous right now. It’s the first time I’ve been up on stage in a while.” She sang “The Woman I Am,” a song she and Jacobs had co-written, and said the last time she had been inside the Ryman was on a date night with her husband.3Billboard. She performed Martina McBride’s “A Broken Wing” as a duet with Season 24 finalist Hannah Harper, the same song she had sung at her original audition two decades earlier. Judge Lionel Richie called it “one dynamic performance.”14People.
