When Did Young Thug Get Locked Up? Arrest, Plea, and Probation

Young Thug, the Atlanta rapper whose legal name is Jeffrey Lamar Williams, was locked up on May 9, 2022, when Fulton County authorities arrested him at his home on racketeering and gang charges. He stayed in jail for roughly two and a half years, denied bond four times, and walked free on the night of October 31, 2024, after accepting a plea deal that commuted his first five years to time served.

The May 2022 Arrest

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’s office secured an 88-page indictment on May 9, 2022, charging Williams and 27 other people with offenses tied to Young Slime Life, or YSL. Prosecutors described YSL as a criminal street gang affiliated with the Bloods, founded in Atlanta in 2012, and listed 181 alleged acts of criminal activity dating back to 2013, including drug sales, armed robberies, carjackings, shootings, and three homicides.1NPR. Williams was initially charged with conspiring to violate Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act and with participating in criminal street gang activity. A superseding indictment in August 2022 added six more counts, bringing his personal total to eight: the RICO conspiracy count, two counts of criminal street gang activity, three counts of violating the Georgia Controlled Substances Act, one count of possessing a firearm during a felony, and one count of possessing a machine gun.2ABC News. Why He Stayed in Jail So Long

Williams did not get a chance to fight the case from the outside. His attorneys filed four separate bond motions, and Judge Ural Glanville denied each one, citing concerns that Williams posed a danger to the community and raising the possibility of witness intimidation.5Rolling Stone. His conditions inside drew their own attention. Days after the arrest, defense attorney Brian Steel filed an emergency motion describing Williams as held in what he called “solitary confinement/total isolation” in a windowless concrete cell with a bed, a toilet, and an overhead light that stayed on around the clock. The motion said Williams had no access to media, no exercise, no showers, and no human contact beyond his legal team, and argued that sleep deprivation was hurting his ability to help with his own defense.6Billboard. What Kept the Trial Going

The case moved slowly from the start. Jury selection began on January 4, 2023, and ran for nearly ten months, the longest selection process in Georgia history. Opening statements did not begin until November 27, 2023, with Judge Glanville presiding.7Rolling Stone. Young Thug YSL Trial Dates and Witnesses8WSB-TV. The proceedings kept getting knocked off course. Co-defendant Shannon Stillwell was stabbed in jail in December 2023. A sheriff’s deputy assigned to the courthouse was arrested over an alleged romantic relationship with co-defendant Christian Eppinger and an attempt to smuggle him contraband. The court’s Zoom feed was hacked, and juror faces were accidentally broadcast on a public livestream.9NBC News. Young Thug’s Criminal Trial Is the Longest in Georgia History

The biggest disruption came on June 10, 2024. Prosecution witness Kenneth Copeland had refused to testify and been jailed for contempt three days earlier. That morning, Judge Glanville held a meeting in chambers with Copeland, Copeland’s attorney, and prosecutors. Defense counsel was not notified and not present. Copeland then took the stand.10NPR. When Steel found out, he confronted Glanville in open court and moved for a mistrial. Glanville ordered him to reveal his source, Steel refused on attorney-client privilege grounds, and the judge held him in contempt and sentenced him to 20 days in jail over 10 weekends.12Los Angeles Times. Defense teams moved to remove Glanville from the case. On July 15, 2024, Judge Rachel Krause granted the recusal. She said she had “no doubt” in Glanville’s ability to be fair but concluded that “the necessity of preserving the public’s confidence in the judicial system” required his removal.14NBC News. The October 31, 2024 Plea and Release

After more than two and a half years behind bars, Williams entered a plea on October 31, 2024. He pleaded no contest to the RICO charge and guilty to the six remaining counts: one count of participating in criminal street gang activity, three drug counts, one count of firearm possession during a felony, and one count of possessing a machine gun.17CNN. The probation terms are strict. His freedom was tested almost immediately. In April 2025, District Attorney Willis filed a 14-page motion to revoke his probation over a social media post featuring a photo of a DA investigator and a caption calling her the “biggest liar in the D.A. office.” Prosecutors said the post led to threats and doxxing aimed at the investigator and her family and pointed to a separate assassination threat against Willis.24Fox 5 Atlanta. He went back on the concert stage in June 2025, visited an Atlanta-area high school in August 2025 to meet one of his plea conditions, and held an anti-violence rally at the Fulton County Courthouse that September.
