AT&T is not paying the $177 million data breach settlement yet, and no payment date has been set. As of an April 23, 2026 update from the settlement administrator, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas has not issued final approval, and the official settlement site states directly: “We do not know how long it will take for the Court to make its decision.”1TelecomDataSettlement.com. Where the Case Stands

A six-hour final approval hearing was held on January 15, 2026. The hearing covered the settlement classes, the opt-out policy, and the plaintiffs’ attorneys’ request for roughly $59 million in fees, about a third of the total fund.3New Haven Register. What Has to Happen Before Payments Start
Three steps stand between the current status and any check being cut:
- Judge Brown must enter a final order approving the settlement.
- The appeals window has to run. If no one appeals, the clock still has to expire. If someone does appeal, resolving it can add months or longer.
- Kroll Settlement Administration has to finish reviewing every timely claim.

That timeline is not supported by the settlement website, which notes the court has not approved the deal at all. A realistic read: if approval arrives and no one appeals, payments could begin several months after the ruling; if there is an appeal, the wait grows considerably.
The amount each claimant ultimately receives will depend on how many valid claims were submitted, the deduction for attorney fees and administration costs, and whether the claimant documented specific losses or elected a proportional share of what remains.1TelecomDataSettlement.com. AT&T Mobility Sales Tax Settlement
A different, fully approved class action covers taxes, fees, and surcharges AT&T charged on mobile internet access between November 2005 and September 2010. That settlement is final, but checks continue to trickle out as individual state and local taxing authorities process refunds into the fund. FTC Data Throttling Refunds
In 2019, AT&T agreed to pay $60 million to resolve FTC allegations that it slowed unlimited-data customers’ speeds after a usage threshold. The FTC distributed $52 million in 2020 and sent an additional round of nearly $6.3 million to 267,734 former customers in April 2024.7Federal Trade Commission. Neither of those programs is connected to the $177 million data breach settlement, and a check from either one does not mean the breach settlement has started paying.
