Donations to the Karmelo Anthony GoFundMe were refunded in full after the platform removed the campaigns under its policy against raising money for the legal defense of violent crimes. The fundraising then moved to GiveSendGo, where a campaign run by Anthony’s mother collected more than $630,000 before being shut down the day after his June 2026 murder conviction. According to the platform, that money was paid out over the preceding year for legal defense and family relocation; reporting indicates much of it went to moving and living expenses rather than solely to attorneys.
Why GoFundMe Refunded the Donations
In the days after the April 2, 2025 stabbing of Austin Metcalf at a Frisco, Texas track meet, supporters created early crowdfunding pages for Anthony on GoFundMe. The company took them down, citing a long-standing policy that prohibits fundraisers for the legal defense of people accused of violent crimes. GoFundMe said every donation was fully refunded.1Dallas Express. GiveSendGo Shuts Down Karmelo Anthony Fundraiser After Murder Conviction
So no money ever actually flowed to the Anthony family through GoFundMe. If you donated there, the charge was reversed. The sums people now associate with the case all came through a different platform.
The GiveSendGo Campaign That Replaced It
Anthony’s mother, Kala Hayes, launched a new campaign on GiveSendGo, a platform whose rules explicitly allow fundraisers for criminal legal defense. The page was titled “Help Karmelo Official Fund” and went live on April 15, 2025, less than two weeks after the stabbing. Its initial goal was close to $1.4 million.2Washington Times. The campaign description told donors their money would go to three things: legal defense, “the safe relocation of the Anthony family due to escalating threats to their safety and well-being,” and “basic living costs, transportation, counseling, and other security measures.”2Washington Times. By the time GiveSendGo closed the campaign on June 10, 2026, one day after Anthony’s conviction, the total raised was more than $630,000.3New York Post. Where the Money Actually Went
GiveSendGo chief executive Jacob Wells said the funds had been “disbursed over the last year” to cover “pre-trial needs,” and that the campaign was closed because that stated purpose was complete.3New York Post. The House Rumor
Early in the campaign’s run, viral posts claimed the family had already used donations to buy a house. GiveSendGo pushed back, saying no funds had been paid out at the point those claims started circulating.3New York Post. The Texas Business Entity
Separate reporting found that Anthony’s parents activated a Texas business entity less than a month after Metcalf’s death. The Indigency Claim After Conviction
The question of where the money went got sharper on June 10, 2026, when Anthony filed a notice of appeal and declared himself a “penniless, destitute, and indigent person, too poor to employ counsel to represent me on the appeal.”8New York Post. As of mid-June 2026, no judge had ruled on whether Anthony qualifies as indigent given the hundreds of thousands of dollars raised in his name. What Donors Can Verify
The documentation available to the public is limited to the platform’s statements and news reporting. GoFundMe refunded everything it received. GiveSendGo collected roughly $630,000, says it paid it out over the course of a year for legal defense and relocation, and closed the page after the conviction. News outlets have confirmed significant spending on moving and living costs, and a Texas business entity tied to Anthony’s parents has drawn scrutiny without a formal investigation. A full public accounting of the money has not been released, and whether a court accepts Anthony’s indigency claim will be the next place where the question of what remains gets tested.
