Former Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick lives in Novi, Michigan, in a five-bedroom house near Beck Road and Nine Mile Road that his wife bought in late 2023 for $807,000.1Metro Times. Kwame Kilpatrick’s Wife Buys Enormous House in Novi Despite Former Mayor’s Unpaid Restitution As of March 2026, the roughly $1 million property faces potential foreclosure over more than $50,000 in unpaid property taxes, and the home has been a focal point in federal prosecutors’ long effort to collect on Kilpatrick’s corruption-case restitution.
The Novi House
LaTicia Kilpatrick purchased the 5,673-square-foot home in December 2023 through her Warren, Michigan-based company, Pathfinder Consulting Firm LLC, taking out a $645,600 mortgage. Neighbors have confirmed that the couple lives there.2WXYZ. Kwame Kilpatrick’s Novi Home Faces Foreclosure Over $50,000 in Unpaid Property Taxes
The purchase drew immediate scrutiny because Kilpatrick owed more than a million dollars in restitution and back taxes at the time. Former Assistant U.S. Attorney Anjali Prasad said buying the property through an LLC would not shield it from federal enforcement, since the house would likely be treated as a joint marital asset subject to a federal lien.1Metro Times. Kwame Kilpatrick’s Wife Buys Enormous House in Novi Despite Former Mayor’s Unpaid Restitution Defense attorney Wade Fink said large purchases by LLCs connected to Kilpatrick “would raise an eyebrow” and that prosecutors have tools to investigate whether such transactions are designed to evade court-ordered debts.3Detroit News. The Foreclosure Risk
Property taxes on the Novi home have gone unpaid for nearly three years. The total due as of March 2026 is $50,600: $26,601 from 2024 and $24,007 from 2025.2WXYZ. The foreclosure date for the Novi property is set for April 1, 2027. If the home goes to auction after that, the minimum bid would reflect the taxes owed plus interest, fees, and a percentage added by law.2WXYZ. Kwame Kilpatrick’s Novi Home Faces Foreclosure Over $50,000 in Unpaid Property Taxes
Why His Address Was Itself a Legal Fight
Before the tax issue surfaced, Kilpatrick’s residence was contested in federal court. After his January 2021 release from prison, he said he lived in Georgia. In an August 2024 filing, the Department of Justice alleged he was actually living in Michigan and had fabricated his Georgia address to get his restitution case transferred out of the federal court that convicted him.5FOX 2 Detroit. Feds Claim Kwame Kilpatrick Is Lying About Address, Waste Time, Resources
Prosecutors said mail sent to the Georgia address was being rerouted to Michigan, that his court correspondence was going to Northville, Michigan, and that the Georgia home was listed for sale at $499,000 and appeared “staged or vacant.” Kilpatrick had also been photographed at multiple events in the Detroit area in March and June 2024.6Detroit Free Press. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jessica Nathan argued that Kilpatrick was “pretending to live in Georgia to thwart efforts to collect” his debt and that transferring the case would “delay the inevitable, and only waste time and resources.”6Detroit Free Press. The Restitution Backdrop
The reason federal prosecutors care where Kilpatrick lives, what accounts he uses, and what property his wife buys goes back to his 2013 federal conviction on 24 counts, including racketeering, mail fraud, wire fraud, and extortion. U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds sentenced him to 28 years and ordered restitution jointly with co-defendant Bobby Ferguson. The total judgment was $1,718,457.11, with Kilpatrick receiving credit for payments made from Ferguson’s seized assets.8Detroit News. Kwame Kilpatrick Fighting Cash Grab by Feds in Restitution Fight
President Donald Trump commuted Kilpatrick’s sentence on January 13, 2021, after about seven years in prison. The commutation shortened his time but did not erase his convictions or his financial obligations.9Detroit Free Press. Trump Kwame Kilpatrick Clemency Pardon Commutation As of early 2023, he had paid roughly $5,000 toward federal restitution. Judge Edmunds denied his request to end supervised release early, writing that he had a “history of spending his money on a lavish lifestyle rather than paying off his obligations.”10Click On Detroit. Collection efforts intensified. In March 2024, a federal court clerk filed writs of continuing garnishment seeking funds from Kilpatrick’s accounts, including PayPal and a crowdfunding platform.6Detroit Free Press. Federal authorities froze the firm’s Comerica Bank account, which held more than $13,000, along with Kilpatrick’s personal accounts in December 2025. In February 2026, Kilpatrick and prosecutors agreed that the remaining restitution balance was $823,649.09 as of January 27, 2026.
