Where He Is Held
Sandusky has moved through three facilities since his incarceration began. He was first assigned to SCI Greene, a maximum-security prison in Waynesburg. In February 2017, he was transferred to SCI Somerset, a medium-security facility.3CBS News. The Sentence He Is Serving
On June 22, 2012, a Centre County jury convicted Sandusky on 45 of 48 counts of child sexual abuse, including involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, indecent assault, unlawful contact with a minor, corruption of minors, and endangering the welfare of children.4Washington Post. The original October 2012 sentence of 30 to 60 years was vacated in February 2019 after the Pennsylvania Superior Court found that mandatory minimums had been imposed under a framework later invalidated by a U.S. Supreme Court ruling requiring any fact that increases a sentence to be submitted to a jury.7Courthouse News Service. Sandusky, then 75, told the court, “I apologize that I’m unable to admit remorse for something that I didn’t do.”8CNN. Jerry Sandusky Resentenced to 30 to 60 Years in Prison
His Appeals Are Still Going
More than a decade of challenges have left the conviction intact. In June 2023, the Court of Common Pleas of Centre County denied a motion for a new trial based on after-discovered evidence. The Pennsylvania Superior Court affirmed that denial on September 19, 2024.5Superior Court of Pennsylvania. Commonwealth v. Sandusky, J-S15033-24
On September 26, 2025, Sandusky filed another petition for post-conviction relief in Centre County. The nearly 400-page filing alleges that prosecutors coached at least two accusers to fabricate stories and that others underwent therapy to “reconstruct memories of alleged abuse.”9Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Penn State Jerry Sandusky Appeal It also references an affidavit described as a recantation from one accuser and a previously undisclosed medical condition that his attorneys argue limited his physical activity.10WGAL. Jerry Sandusky, Former Penn State Football Coach, Files New Appeal As of October 2025, the Centre County District Attorney’s Office had requested additional time to respond and no ruling had been issued.
He Still Says He Is Innocent
Sandusky has never acknowledged guilt. His statement at the 2019 resentencing echoed the position he has maintained since trial, and his latest petition builds on that same theory of fabricated or coached testimony.
His wife, Dottie Sandusky, has been his most visible public defender. In a 2014 interview on NBC’s Today show, she said she “definitely” believed in his innocence and suggested his accusers had been “manipulated” by the prospect of financial settlements.11ESPN. Jerry Sandusky’s Wife Says She Believes He Is ‘Definitely’ Innocent She acknowledged that her husband had showered with children but described it as generational behavior. In a separate op-ed that same year, she wrote that “Jerry is not a pedophile” and criticized the documentary Happy Valley as an “inaccurate portrayal.”12The Morning Call. What Happens Next
The practical picture is simple. Sandusky is 80-something and housed in a minimum-security prison roughly a decade and a half into a 30-to-60-year term, with parole eligibility set at age 98. His 2025 post-conviction petition is pending before the same Centre County court that denied his last one, and the Commonwealth has not yet filed its response. Nothing about his current legal status has changed the sentence he is serving.
The broader fallout from the case, including the Freeh Report findings against Penn State’s leadership, the criminal convictions of former president Graham Spanier and two other administrators, the NCAA sanctions and the university’s settlements with accusers, and Pennsylvania’s expanded mandatory-reporting laws, all remain in place, but none of it is pending or shifting around Sandusky himself.
