Where Is Mystikal? Guilty Plea, 20-Year Sentence, and Release

Mystikal, the New Orleans rapper whose legal name is Michael Tyler, is in Louisiana state custody serving a 20-year prison sentence for third-degree rape. Judge Steven Tureau of Louisiana’s 23rd Judicial District Court imposed the sentence on June 16, 2026, after Tyler pleaded guilty in March 2026 to raping a woman at his Prairieville home in 2022.¹ He had been held without bond at the Ascension Parish Jail for nearly four years before sentencing.²

What He Pleaded Guilty To

On March 17, 2026, Tyler pleaded guilty to third-degree rape in an Ascension Parish courtroom. The plea deal reduced the lead charge from first-degree rape, which carries a mandatory life sentence under Louisiana law, and set a sentencing cap of 20 years.³²

Days before sentencing, Tyler filed a motion to withdraw the plea, arguing he “did not have sufficient opportunity to fully consider the consequences” of the agreement. The court dismissed it.²⁴ At the June 16 hearing, the victim asked the judge to impose the maximum sentence and described being punched, choked, and forcibly raped. Judge Tureau sentenced Tyler to 20 years.⁵

How Long He Will Be Behind Bars

Under Louisiana law, third-degree rape carries up to 25 years at hard labor, and the sentence must be served without benefit of parole, probation, or suspension.⁶ That means Tyler’s 20 years must be served in full. Whether his nearly four years of pretrial detention will be credited against the sentence is not confirmed in the record, though Louisiana law generally permits credit for time served.

The 2022 Incident and Arrest

On July 30, 2022, Ascension Parish sheriff’s detectives responded to a hospital where a woman with visible injuries reported being sexually assaulted and identified Tyler as her attacker.⁷ According to the arrest warrant, Tyler had accused the woman, an acquaintance visiting his Prairieville home, of stealing $100. He allegedly punched and choked her, pulled braids from her hair, and took her keys and phone so she could not leave, then forced her to send him $150 through CashApp before releasing her.⁸

An Ascension Parish grand jury indicted him that September on ten counts: first-degree rape, simple criminal damage to property, false imprisonment, domestic abuse battery by strangulation, simple robbery, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of Schedule I, II, and IV controlled dangerous substances, and possession of marijuana. The drug counts came from a search of his home after the arrest.⁹

Nearly Four Years Held Without Bond

At a bond hearing on August 2, 2022, a judge ordered Tyler held without bond, and he stayed in the Ascension Parish Jail from that point through sentencing.⁸ The case was delayed repeatedly. A bond request was denied as late as November 2025.¹⁰

What Happens When He Is Released

Third-degree rape is classified as a Tier III sex offense in Louisiana, which carries lifetime registration and quarterly in-person reporting.¹¹ On release, Tyler will have to register in person with the sheriff of his parish of residence within three business days and provide photographs, fingerprints, DNA, vehicle details, and all electronic contact information.¹²

His Prior Record

This is not Tyler’s first conviction. In 2003, he pleaded guilty to sexual battery involving his former hairstylist and was sentenced to six years in prison. He served roughly six years and was released in January 2010.² While serving that sentence, he also pleaded guilty to two federal misdemeanor counts of failing to file tax returns on income of more than $800,000 in 1998 and more than $930,000 in 1999, and received a one-year federal sentence to run concurrently with his state time.¹³
