Where He’s Being Held
Fort Dix is the largest federal prison in the country, housing over 4,100 inmates. Combs’ legal team specifically requested the facility, citing its drug treatment programming and its proximity to his family.1NBC News. Sean Diddy Combs Transferred to Federal Prison3CBS News. His sentence, imposed by U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian on October 3, 2025, also carries a $500,000 fine and five years of supervised release. Combs received credit for roughly 13 months already served since his September 2024 arrest.4BBC News. What His Days Look Like Inside
Combs lives in a housing unit with about 200 other inmates and sleeps in a room shared with nine people.5The New York Times. Sean Combs Enrolls in Drug Program at Fort Dix He has been assigned as a chaplain’s assistant, considered one of the more desirable jobs in federal prison. The role involves maintaining the religious library, cleaning the chaplain’s office, and helping with record-keeping, and it gives him access to a private office and to the chapel, one of the few spaces where inmates can gather freely.3CBS News. He has also restarted “Free Game with Diddy,” an entrepreneurship course he previously ran at the Brooklyn detention center where he was held before transfer.6Forbes. Sean Diddy Combs Life in Prison
Combs is enrolled in the Bureau of Prisons’ Residential Drug Abuse Program, known as RDAP, the agency’s most intensive drug treatment offering. Successful completion can reduce a federal sentence by up to one year for inmates convicted of nonviolent offenses, which helps explain the earlier projected release dates.3CBS News. His time at Fort Dix has not been uneventful. On November 3, 2025, he was cited for making a prohibited multi-person phone call, a violation of rules intended to prevent inmates from coordinating outside activity. Officials recommended he lose 90 days of phone and commissary privileges. His legal team argued the call was a procedural attorney-client communication and that Combs had not been properly briefed on the phone regulations.3CBS News. Sean Diddy Combs Prison Life
Why He’s in Prison
Combs was arrested in a Manhattan hotel lobby on September 16, 2024, and indicted in the Southern District of New York on three counts: racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking by force, fraud, or coercion, and transportation to engage in prostitution. He pleaded not guilty to all three.7CourtListener. United States v. Combs Docket
Prosecutors alleged a “Combs Enterprise” that used his businesses and employees to facilitate sex trafficking and coerced sexual performances they called “freak-offs,” dating back to at least 2008. The indictment described control maintained over victims through violence, threats, narcotics, and financial coercion.8U.S. Department of Justice. Sean Combs Charged in Manhattan Federal Court
Trial began in May 2025 before Judge Subramanian. The prosecution called 34 witnesses, including Cassandra “Cassie” Ventura, Combs’ former longtime girlfriend, who testified over four days about a decade-long relationship she described as violent and coercive. Jurors were shown 2016 hotel surveillance video of Combs hitting, kicking, and dragging Ventura in a hallway.9NPR. Diddy Trial: Cassie Testimony10ABC News. Who Testified at the Sean Diddy Combs Trial
On July 2, 2025, after 13 hours of deliberation across three days, the jury returned a split verdict. Combs was acquitted of racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking. He was convicted on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. Those two convictions are what he is now serving time for.11NBC News. Diddy Sentencing Live Updates
At sentencing, prosecutors asked for 135 months. The defense asked for time served. Judge Subramanian imposed 50 months, less than half of the government’s request but well above the typical range for a Mann Act conviction. He applied a coercion enhancement, finding that Combs’ threats against two women established relevant conduct, while declining a more severe enhancement that would have driven the term higher.12CBS News. Before the sentence was announced, Combs addressed the court directly: “I’m so sorry. Y’all deserve better. I’ve failed as a father.”14People. Everything Diddy’s Kids Have Said About the Crimes
The Pending Appeal
Combs’ lawyers announced an appeal immediately after sentencing. In December 2025, the defense filed an 84-page brief with the Second Circuit Court of Appeals seeking an outright acquittal, immediate release, or resentencing.15NBC News. Diddy’s Lawyers Press Appeals Court
The central issue is the judge’s use of “acquitted conduct” at sentencing. Although the jury found Combs not guilty of sex trafficking and racketeering, Judge Subramanian found at sentencing that Combs had “coerced, exploited and forced” women into sexual encounters, and used that finding to apply the coercion enhancement. The defense argues this violated the Fifth and Sixth Amendments and that the 50-month term is the longest ever imposed on a defendant convicted under the same guidelines provisions with a comparable criminal history. Defense attorney Marc Agnifilo accused Judge Subramanian of acting “as a 13th juror” who “second-guessed the jury’s verdict.”15NBC News. Diddy’s Lawyers Press Appeals Court16Complex. The case is among the first to test Amendment 826 to the federal sentencing guidelines, which took effect November 1, 2024, and restricts the use of acquitted conduct in calculating sentencing ranges. The Department of Justice has opposed the amendment, arguing sentencing judges should retain broad discretion to consider trial evidence.13Bloomberg Law. Appellate attorney Alexandra Shapiro argued before a three-judge Second Circuit panel on April 9, 2026. Circuit Judge William J. Nardini called the case “exceptionally difficult” and said it raised a “question of first impression, not only for this court, but apparently for any federal court of appeals in the country.” The government countered that the sentence rested on “admitted conduct,” specifically the “extreme physical violence that took place in the context of these freak offs,” not solely on acquitted conduct. The panel did not rule from the bench, and as of mid-2026 the court is still deliberating.17Courthouse News Service. Sean Diddy Combs Asks Second Circuit to Toss Conviction18Reuters. Other Legal Trouble Still Ahead
The federal sentence is not the end of Combs’ legal exposure. He has been sued dozens of times by civil plaintiffs, including several who say they were minors at the time of the alleged incidents. In June 2026, an unnamed former child actor filed suit in Los Angeles County Superior Court alleging Combs sexually assaulted him at a Hollywood networking event in 2007. Former Danity Kane member Dawn Richard also has a pending civil case alleging assault and false imprisonment. Cassie Ventura’s 2023 lawsuit was settled for a reported $20 million. Combs’ civil attorney, Jonathan Davis, has said Combs “categorically denies as false and defamatory all claims that he sexually abused anyone.”19Forbes. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office is also reviewing two sexual assault cases involving Combs. The LAPD and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department each submitted a separate investigation to prosecutors in late 2025, stemming from allegations by music producer Jonathan Hay, who says Combs assaulted him in Los Angeles in 2020 and 2021. As of June 2026, no state criminal charges have been filed, and the District Attorney’s office has given no timeline for a charging decision.21The Guardian. For now, the practical answer to where Combs is remains the same: Fort Dix, in a shared room on a 200-inmate unit, working as a chaplain’s assistant, enrolled in RDAP, with a release date of February 23, 2028, and an appeal that could change that date in either direction.
