Where Is Travis Turner? Charges, Theories, and Reporting Tips

Travis Turner has not been seen since the evening of November 20, 2025, when he walked into the wooded, mountainous terrain behind his home in Appalachia, Virginia, carrying a firearm. Where is Travis Turner? As of mid-2026, no one in law enforcement knows. He remains a fugitive wanted on ten felony charges in Wise County, and despite one of the largest searches in the region’s recent history, there have been no credible sightings.¹

How He Disappeared

On the afternoon of November 20, 2025, special agents from the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation were on their way to Turner’s home to question him. They had not yet obtained warrants and were not coming to arrest him. Before they arrived, they learned he was no longer at the residence.²

According to the family’s attorney, Adrian Collins, Turner walked into the heavily wooded, mountainous area behind his home with a firearm, as he had done many times before.³ He left behind his car, keys, wallet, identification, cash, contact lenses, glasses, and prescribed daily medications.⁴

When Turner did not return that evening, his wife tried to file a missing persons report but was told to wait 24 hours. She filed with Virginia State Police on November 21, and he was added to the state missing persons database on November 23.⁵ The timing matters: at the moment he walked into the woods, Turner had not been charged with any crime and was not wanted by police.⁶

The Charges Against Him

Virginia State Police obtained ten arrest warrants on November 24, 2025, four days after he vanished. The charges: five counts of possession of child pornography and five counts of using a computer to solicit a minor.⁷ The case is filed in Wise County Circuit Court, but a judge has sealed all records connected to the investigation, including the sealing order itself.⁸ Police have declined to say whether any victims are connected to Union High School, where Turner coached football and taught.⁹ State police have said additional charges are pending as the investigation continues.²

The Search

Virginia State Police requested help from the U.S. Marshals Service on November 26, 2025, and the FBI joined soon after.¹⁰ The Marshals issued a wanted poster warning that Turner “may be armed” and offered a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to his arrest.⁷

Search and rescue teams, K-9 units, and drones combed the rugged Appalachian terrain around his home, an area of steep elevation, dense forest, and rivers. The Black Diamond Search and Rescue team participated but declined to share its findings publicly.¹¹

By a March 2026 update, Virginia State Police had followed more than 178 leads across seven states and internationally. Every tip was deemed unfounded. Twenty-seven personnel were assigned to the case full-time, with more than 50 additional state, local, and federal officers providing support.² VSP Captain J. Daniels described the effort as “two-fold: we have the criminal investigation and the search,” adding that the case is “worked on every day.”¹²

Competing Theories on His Fate

Investigators have not publicly committed to a theory, and the absence of physical evidence has pushed observers in opposite directions.

Crime commentator Nancy Grace has argued that Turner is alive and in hiding. She pointed to K-9 dogs finding no trail, drones detecting nothing, and no remains being recovered after months of searching, and suggested Turner had “a plan in place for his escape well before he decided to flee,” possibly intending to change his appearance and leave the country. A community member interviewed by reporters made a similar point, noting Turner’s deep local connections and people who might help him.¹³

Turner’s family reads the same facts the other way. Through attorney Adrian Collins, they have pointed to the items he left behind, including his vehicle, wallet, daily medications, and glasses, and said their “last contact with Travis causes them to have great concern for his well being.”¹⁴ Collins has also rejected any suggestion that Turner’s wife Leslie helped him escape, saying, “His wife was not helping him escape, she was asking for help to find him.”³ Leslie Turner has issued a direct plea to her husband: “Come home and face the allegations by defending yourself in a court of law. Don’t leave your family to fight this battle without you.”¹⁵

The investigation is active. Virginia State Police are taking tips at 276-484-9483 or questions@vsp.virginia.gov, and the U.S. Marshals Service is accepting information at 1-877-WANTED2.¹ The Marshals have cautioned that Turner may be armed.⁷
