The 2024 Georgia Fentanyl Law

The manslaughter count was brought under Georgia Code § 16-5-3.1, which took effect on April 30, 2024. The statute created the offense of aggravated involuntary manslaughter for fentanyl-related overdose deaths and lets prosecutors charge people who supply a fatal dose. A conviction carries ten to thirty years in prison or life. The law does not require prosecutors to prove the defendant knew the specific chemical identity of the substance they distributed.5Justia.
