Who Is Chad Ollinger? Murder Charge and Competency Ruling

Chad Ollinger, the reality television personality from Discovery Channel’s Mystery at Blind Frog Ranch, faces an open murder charge in Las Vegas after his cellmate at the Clark County Detention Center was found dead in December 2025. A judge declared him incompetent to stand trial the following month, and as of mid-2026 the case is frozen while he waits for competency restoration treatment.

What Happened in the Cell

On the night of December 26, 2025, corrections officers at the Clark County Detention Center found 42-year-old Christopher Kelly motionless on the floor of the cell he shared with Ollinger.¹²³

According to the arrest report, neighboring inmates told investigators they heard a fight and someone screaming for help. When an officer approached the cell to distribute medication, Ollinger said Kelly “was not feeling well.” Officers then saw blood on Kelly’s face.⁴ Police reports say Ollinger strangled Kelly and smashed his head into a bed frame.⁵ Ollinger later told police he strangled Kelly for roughly four to five minutes and placed the body on the bottom bunk.

What Ollinger Told Police

In his interview after the killing, Ollinger told officers he possessed a “supernatural ability” to read people, and that this ability had identified Kelly as a child predator.⁶ He acknowledged he had no evidence beyond that intuition. He said he felt a “responsibility” to act because his own children had been taken from him, described the killing as spontaneous, and said something “snaps” when he begins to “know” things.⁷ He told officers he felt no emotion during the incident and did not care if he spent the rest of his life in prison.⁴

Incompetent To Stand Trial

Ollinger was charged with open murder and held without bond. Judge Eric Goodman ordered a competency evaluation before the case could move forward.⁸

On January 28, 2026, Eighth District Judge Christy Craig declared Ollinger legally incompetent to stand trial. Two of three evaluating doctors found him incompetent; a third found him competent. Judge Craig ordered him transferred to a mental health facility for competency restoration and told him, “I will see you when you get back from the hospital.” No timeline was set for his return. Under Nevada law, criminal proceedings are halted while a defendant undergoes restoration. He is represented by a public defender.⁹

The Motion To Dismiss

Months after the commitment order, Ollinger still had not received treatment. A May 21, 2026 court filing showed him still at the Clark County Detention Center, waiting for a bed. His defense team argued he had been waiting 205 days without treatment and that the 112-day delay since the commitment order violated his due process rights. They asked the court to dismiss the murder charge outright.¹⁰

Prosecutors opposed dismissal, calling Ollinger “far too violent and dangerous” for standard restorative treatment and asking that a doctor reexamine him. The hearing on the dismissal motion was scheduled for June 2026.¹⁰

How He Ended Up in That Jail

Ollinger had a run of legal trouble in the year before Kelly’s death. In November 2024, he was arrested in Amarillo, Texas, for evading arrest with a vehicle after allegedly fleeing police on a motorcycle and then on foot. A Potter County grand jury indicted him on a third-degree felony evading arrest charge in January 2025.¹¹ In February 2025, he was booked into the Gray County Jail for driving with an invalid license with previous convictions and speeding.¹²

In July 2025, his family reported him missing in New Mexico. He was entered into the National Crime Information Center database and later located in Albuquerque.¹³ On October 27, 2025, he was arrested in Clark County, Nevada, as a fugitive from another state, and he refused extradition on November 3. The specific origin of the fugitive warrant was not clear from court records.¹¹ He was found in contempt of court in Clark County on December 18, 2025, and sentenced to a brief jail term with a release date of January 12, 2026. The reasons for the contempt finding were also unclear from court records.¹⁴ Kelly was killed eight days after that contempt sentencing.

Who He Is on Television

Ollinger, 41, is originally from Dumas, Texas, and has four children.¹⁵ He co-starred with his father, Duane Ollinger, on Mystery at Blind Frog Ranch, a Discovery Channel series that ran for five seasons between 2021 and 2025 and followed the pair as they searched for treasure on Duane’s 160-acre property in Utah’s Uinta Basin.⁹ Chad had sold his crop-dusting business and family home to help fund the operation and performed high-risk tasks on the show, including diving into underground cavern systems.¹⁶
