Who Was John Meehan? The True Story of Dirty John

John Meehan was a convicted felon, former nurse anesthetist, and serial con artist who spent decades posing as a doctor to defraud, stalk, and terrorize women across the Midwest and Southern California. Known publicly as “Dirty John” after the Los Angeles Times investigative podcast of the same name, he was killed in self-defense in August 2016 by his 25-year-old stepdaughter, Terra Newell, after he ambushed her with a knife in a Newport Beach parking structure. He was 57.

Understanding who Meehan was means tracing a pattern that began in childhood and ran, with brief interruptions for prison, until the day he died.

A Childhood Built Around Fraud

Meehan grew up in a family where deception was the family trade. His father, William Meehan, operated the Diamond Wheel Casino in San Jose and, according to Meehan’s sister Karen Douvillier, taught his son to run insurance scams and file false claims. “He was taught to manipulate at a very early age,” Karen told reporters.1Refinery29. Dirty John Meehan’s Family and Upbringing After his parents separated in the mid-1970s, John became what relatives described as his father’s “partner-in-con.”

As a teenager, he placed broken glass in food at a Taco Bell to trigger a payout and once jumped in front of a Corvette to collect a cash settlement. His sister Donna later suspected John of killing their father in 1997; William was in hospice care for cancer when Donna left John alone with him and returned five minutes later to find him dead. An oncologist reportedly said someone had administered morphine. No charges were filed.1Refinery29. Dirty John Meehan’s Family and Upbringing

His approach was consistent. He posed as a physician, often meeting women in medical settings, used fabricated credentials to build trust, isolated them from family and friends, and then moved to threats, extortion, and financial exploitation. Several women said he coerced intimate photos from them and then used the images as leverage. In one case, he sent explicit pictures of a woman to her child’s Catholic school.6Los Angeles Times.
