Charlie Kirk was assassinated on September 10, 2025, by a gunman who told his family and romantic partner he had decided Kirk “spreads too much hate” and could no longer be tolerated.1ABC News. Tyler Robinson Set to Face Formal Charges in Shooting Death The accused, 22-year-old Tyler James Robinson of Washington, Utah, fired a single rifle shot from a rooftop at Utah Valley University while Kirk, 31, was taking questions at an outdoor Turning Point USA event. Robinson had no prior criminal record and no history of violence. The question of why he did it is answered mostly in his own words, through texts, a handwritten note, and statements to his parents after his arrest.2BBC. Tyler Robinson Details
What Robinson Said About Why He Did It
Robinson’s stated reason was ideological hostility to Kirk personally. In text messages to his roommate and romantic partner Lance Twiggs after the shooting, Robinson wrote: “I had enough of his hatred. Some hate can’t be negotiated out.” When his parents asked him afterward why, he said “there is too much evil and the guy spreads too much hate.”1ABC News. The attack was planned. A handwritten note left under his keyboard for Twiggs read: “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I’m going to take it.”4BBC. Utah prosecutors have treated the political character of the killing as a formal element of the case. Several of the charges filed against Robinson include a “victim targeting enhancement” under Utah law, alleging he selected Kirk because of Kirk’s political expression.6Utah County Attorney’s Office. Who Tyler Robinson Is
Robinson grew up in a suburb of St. George, Utah, in a Republican household that former classmates described as “diehard Trump” supporters ahead of the 2020 election.7CNN. Family members and investigators told reporters his political views had shifted in the year before the shooting. The Engraved Shell Casings
Investigators recovered a bolt-action Mauser .30-06 rifle Robinson had abandoned in a wooded area after fleeing the rooftop. Its shell casings carried engraved messages that blurred the picture of his motive rather than sharpened it. Among them: “Hey fascist! Catch!” with directional arrows, lyrics from the Italian anti-fascist song “Bella Ciao,” and internet meme lines including “If you Read This, You Are GAY Lmao.” Robinson told Twiggs the engravings were “mostly a big meme.”4BBC. Tyler Robinson Communications Investigators characterized them as a mix of political allusion, internet culture, and trolling.
How the Shooting Happened
Kirk’s appearance at UVU was part of his “American Comeback Tour.” The event drew more than 3,000 people to a campus courtyard, well above the 1,500 to 2,000 the university had anticipated.11Campus Safety Magazine. Investigators later lifted a palm print, a forearm imprint, shoe impressions, and shell casings from the roof.13FBI. Utah Valley Shooting Updates
The manhunt lasted about 30 hours. During it, Robinson joined a Discord group chat of around 20 people, where an acquaintance tagged him alongside the FBI’s surveillance images. He first deflected by claiming a “doppelganger” was trying to “get me in trouble,” then hours later wrote: “Hey guys, I have bad news for you all … It was me at UVU yesterday. im sorry for all of this.”14The New York Times. The Criminal Case
On September 16, 2025, the Utah County Attorney’s Office charged Robinson in the Fourth Judicial District Court with seven counts: aggravated murder (a capital felony), felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury, two counts of obstruction of justice (for moving the rifle and disposing of clothing), two counts of witness tampering (for directing Twiggs to delete texts and stay silent), and a misdemeanor count of committing a violent offense in the presence of a child.6Utah County Attorney’s Office. The Ballistics Dispute
An ATF comparison of a bullet fragment recovered from Kirk’s body against the rifle found at the scene was deemed “inconclusive.” Robinson’s defense characterized that as evidence the weapon could not be linked to the killing, and some media and social media accounts went further, saying the bullet “did not match.”20PBS NewsHour. Did a Bullet Analysis Clear Charlie Kirk’s Suspected Killer Forensic experts pushed back. “Inconclusive” means the fragment was too deformed to determine whether it came from that rifle, not that the rifle was ruled out. High-velocity rifle rounds frequently deform badly enough to prevent a definitive match, and an elimination would require clearly mismatched rifling characteristics. Prosecutors have also pointed to DNA consistent with Robinson’s on the trigger, on one fired cartridge casing, on two unfired cartridges, and on the towel wrapping the rifle.21The Guardian. Why Kirk Was a Target
Kirk was 31 when he was killed and had spent nearly half his life building a conservative movement that drew intense devotion and intense hostility. Born in 1993, he founded Turning Point USA in 2012 at age 18, initially out of a garage in Illinois. By the time of his death, the group had more than 800 college chapters and annual revenues around $100 million.25NPR. Vance later said Kirk “didn’t just help us win in 2024, he helped us staff the entire government.”10PBS NewsHour. How Charlie Kirk Helped Shape a Conservative Force for a New Generation
He was also a polarizing figure. Critics pointed to his promotion of false claims about COVID-19 treatments, his “Professor Watchlist” targeting liberal academics, and inflammatory comments about race, Jewish communities, and LGBTQ rights.26Britannica. Charlie Kirk His signature format was the open-air campus debate, where he fielded hostile questions from students in person. That format made him enormously visible and, as events proved, exposed. He was shot while doing exactly that.
A Climate of Political Violence
Robinson’s own statements point at Kirk’s rhetoric. The wider “why” sits in a national pattern. The Center for Strategic and International Studies found that attacks and plots against elected officials, candidates, and political workers over the five years before Kirk was killed were nearly triple the total of the preceding 25 years combined.27The Conversation. Charlie Kirk’s Assassination Is the Latest Act of Political Violence in a Febrile United States Research cited after the killing found that roughly one-quarter of the American public now supports some form of political violence, a sentiment present across the political spectrum.28PBS NewsHour. Analysis: Why Charlie Kirk’s Killing Could Embolden More Political Violence
Kirk’s killing was not an outlier event. In June 2025, three months before, Minnesota House Democratic caucus leader Melissa Hortman and her husband were shot and killed at their Brooklyn Park home in what Governor Tim Walz called a “politically motivated assassination.” A state senator and his wife were shot and survived the same night. The gunman, Vance Boelter, was found with a manifesto listing lawmakers and officials, and in June 2026 pleaded guilty under a deal requiring two consecutive life sentences plus 40 years.29MPR News. The killing also altered the environment Kirk had built his career inside. A Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression survey of more than 2,000 undergraduates found that 45 percent felt less comfortable expressing views in class after the shooting, and 50 percent felt less comfortable attending or hosting controversial public events. In the months that followed, the Foundation documented 80 campaigns to sanction scholars, resulting in 18 terminations, alongside 25 campaigns targeting individual students or groups.32FIRE. How the Assassination of Charlie Kirk Is Reshaping Campus Speech Nationwide
The clearest answer to why Kirk was assassinated remains the one his accused killer gave himself, in texts, a note, and remarks to his family: he had come to believe Kirk’s public rhetoric was intolerable and chose to act. Whether a jury accepts that framing, and whether the state proves the rest of its case against Robinson, is what the trial ahead will decide.
