William Hutchinson: Criminal Cases, Civil Verdict, and Business Impact

Dallas real estate developer William “Bill” Hutchinson has faced both criminal charges and civil lawsuits over sexual assault allegations, and the cases have resolved in different ways. He pleaded guilty in April 2024 to a misdemeanor sexual battery count in California involving a 16-year-old girl; a Dallas County grand jury declined in 2022 to indict him on a separate Texas felony charge; and in June 2026, a Dallas civil jury found him liable for sexually assaulting two of three women who sued him and awarded $860,000 in combined damages.

The California Criminal Case

In July 2021, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office charged Hutchinson with one felony count of rape of an unconscious person and five misdemeanor counts of sexual battery. Prosecutors alleged he brought two 16-year-old girls to his Laguna Beach vacation home on separate trips, raping one while she was unconscious and committing sexual battery against both.1Orange County District Attorney. On April 28, 2024, he pleaded guilty to a single count of misdemeanor sexual battery under a plea agreement. The remaining five charges, including the felony rape count, were dismissed; the Orange County District Attorney had reportedly declined to prosecute the felony because of insufficient evidence.3D Magazine. The Texas Felony Charge That Did Not Result in Indictment

One day before the California charges became public, on July 7, 2021, Hutchinson turned himself in to Highland Park, Texas, police on a separate felony charge of sexual assault of a minor. The complaint came from a 17-year-old girl who alleged Hutchinson digitally penetrated her without consent while she was intoxicated at his Highland Park home.6Fox 4 News. The Dallas Civil Lawsuit

Three women filed a combined civil suit in Dallas County, each seeking more than $1 million. The first complaint was filed in July 2021, with the other two following the next year.5Dallas Morning News. Each said Hutchinson had offered to help with her career before the encounter.

The specific allegations differed:

Defense at Trial

McCathern argued the suit was financially motivated, pointing out the plaintiffs had initially sought nearly $120 million before settling on lower figures. He introduced photos and text messages between Hutchinson and the women to challenge their accounts of the meetings as professional mentorship.11People Newspapers. The Verdict

On June 25, 2026, after 11 hours of deliberation, the jury returned a split verdict. It found Hutchinson liable for sexually assaulting the two plaintiffs who alleged rape and awarded each $430,000, for a combined $860,000. Each award broke down as $100,000 for future medical expenses, $80,000 for past mental anguish, and $250,000 for future mental anguish. The jury rejected the claims of the third plaintiff, who had alleged groping.11People Newspapers. Jury Reaches Verdict in Bill Hutchinson Sexual Assault Allegations Civil Trial12Texas Lawbook. Whether Hutchinson Will Pay

After the verdict, McCathern said Hutchinson would not have to pay the $860,000, citing what he called the “one satisfaction rule.” Under that principle, settlement amounts previously paid by other defendants in the same lawsuit are credited against a later jury award. Because the damages fell below what the plaintiffs had already recovered from another defendant in an earlier settlement, McCathern said Hutchinson and his associated entities had “no financial liability as a result of yesterday’s verdict.”10Dallas Morning News.
