Yordanis Cobos-Martinez: Capital Murder Charge, Prior Record, and ICE Status

Yordanis Cobos-Martinez is a 37-year-old Cuban national charged with capital murder in Dallas County for the September 10, 2025 machete killing and beheading of his coworker, 50-year-old motel manager Chandra Mouli Nagamallaiah, at the Downtown Suites in Old East Dallas. He is held without bond at the Dallas County Jail and is subject to an ICE immigration detainer lodged the day after the killing. The case drew national attention because ICE had released him from detention on January 13, 2025 after Cuba refused to take him back.

What Happened at the Downtown Suites

Cobos-Martinez and Nagamallaiah both worked at the motel on Samuell Boulevard near Interstate 30. According to the arrest affidavit, the confrontation began around 9:26 a.m. when Nagamallaiah told Cobos-Martinez not to use a broken washing machine, relaying the instruction through a female coworker who translated. Cobos-Martinez became angry that the manager had not spoken to him directly.1CBS News. Cuban National Accused Killing Dallas Motel Manager

Video from the scene showed Cobos-Martinez leaving the room, retrieving a machete, and attacking Nagamallaiah as the manager tried to flee toward the front office. Nagamallaiah’s wife and son came out and tried to intervene; Cobos-Martinez pushed them away repeatedly and continued the assault.2NBC News.
