Zachary Hughes Murder Case: Trial, Sentence, and Appeal

The Zachary Hughes murder case is the South Carolina prosecution of a Juilliard-trained concert pianist who was convicted in February 2025 of stabbing 41-year-old Christina Parcell 35 times at her Greer home in October 2021, sentenced to life in prison, and is now appealing his conviction while the man he named as the person who hired him awaits his own murder-related trial.

Zachary David Hughes graduated from the Juilliard School in 2015, where he studied piano under Jerome Lowenthal.1Horizon Records. The Killing on Canebrake Drive

Christina Parcell was a veterinary technician and single mother living on Canebrake Drive in Greer with her sister and her nine-year-old daughter. She was in a bitter custody dispute with the girl’s father, John Mello, who was living in Italy at the time.4ABC News. Rose Petals and a Blade: Pianist Confesses to Woman’s 2021 Stabbing

On October 13, 2021, Parcell’s fiancé Bradly Post found her body inside the home. She had been stabbed 35 times, with wounds to her jugular and carotid arteries.5Fox Carolina. How Investigators Identified Hughes

Detectives first looked at Mello, then at Post. Mello was ruled out because he was in Italy. Post was cleared of the killing after Solicitor Walt Wilkins noted he appeared in “pristine condition” when officers arrived.4ABC News. Rose Petals and a Blade: Pianist Confesses to Woman’s 2021 Stabbing

The break came from Michael Manigault, a photographer who did odd jobs at Mello’s Greenville County home and had met Hughes through Mello. After police interviewed Manigault, they turned to Hughes. Manigault was never charged.6WSPA. Apparent Drag Marks, Graphic Images of Canebrake Murder Presented in Trial

Surveillance filled in the rest. A neighbor’s Ring camera showed someone approaching the house, and roadside Flock cameras captured a gold Ford truck carrying a black bicycle that matched one seen near the scene. Investigators traced the truck to Hughes through a state motor vehicle database. DNA under Parcell’s fingernails matched Hughes’s profile even though he had used paint thinner in an attempt to erase trace evidence.4ABC News. The Trial

Hughes’s trial ran roughly two weeks in Greenville County Circuit Court before Judge Patrick C. Fant III and ended on February 20, 2025. The state called 32 witnesses and put on nearly four terabytes of digital evidence, including more than 1,000 text messages between Hughes and Mello, some sent the day of the killing.5Fox Carolina. What Prosecutors Argued

Solicitor Wilkins called Hughes a “cold-blooded killer” who carried out a planned murder to help Mello win custody. He pointed to the text history, the planted cocaine, and a months-long harassment campaign in which Hughes and Mello distributed nude photos of Parcell. Because South Carolina had no revenge-porn statute at the time, that conduct was charged as harassment. Wilkins told jurors Hughes had received a “target on a silver platter” from Mello and believed he would never be caught.5Fox Carolina. What Hughes Said

Hughes took the stand and admitted he killed Parcell. He testified he had never met her before that day but that Mello had described her as “a prostitute, a drug addict and a danger to her child.” Hughes said he came to believe the daughter was being sexually abused and “needed to act.” He also said Mello offered him $5,000, and then $10,000, to do it. Mello denied the offer, saying it “never happened.”4ABC News. Rose Petals and a Blade: Pianist Confesses to Woman’s 2021 Stabbing

Investigator Jarrad Sparkman testified there was no evidence supporting Mello’s claims that Parcell was a prostitute, drug dealer, or escort.4ABC News. Rose Petals and a Blade: Pianist Confesses to Woman’s 2021 Stabbing Judge Fant excluded defense evidence of child sexual abuse material discovered during the broader investigation, ruling it more prejudicial than probative. He also refused to instruct the jury on “defense of others,” reasoning that Parcell’s daughter was at school at the time and therefore not in imminent danger.8WYFF. Verdict and Sentence

After about three hours, the jury on February 20, 2025 found Hughes guilty of murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, first-degree burglary, second-degree harassment, and conspiracy to commit second-degree harassment. He was acquitted of first-degree harassment and conspiracy to commit first-degree harassment.5Fox Carolina. Prosecution Calls Pianist Cold Blooded Killer; Defense Says He Acted to Save Child

Judge Fant imposed two concurrent life sentences for the murder and burglary counts, plus five years on the weapons charge. Parcell’s sister Tina told the court Hughes had shown no remorse and alleged he had joined the military infantry because he “wanted to kill someone.”10WYFF. The Appeal

Hughes’s attorneys filed an initial 88-page appellate brief with the South Carolina Court of Appeals in December 2025 and an amended brief in March 2026. Their arguments center on three trial rulings:11FITSNews. Rose Petal Murder Appeal Sharpens Arguments for Overturning Convictions

  • Exclusion of the child sexual abuse material tied to Post and to Parcell, which the defense says prevented Hughes from explaining his state of mind and violated his constitutional right to present a defense.
  • Jury instructions, including the refusal to give a “defense of others” charge and a modified malice instruction that dropped the phrase “without just cause or excuse” and told jurors that “planning or preparation to kill” automatically establishes malice.
  • The contempt finding, which the amended brief treats as a standalone issue, arguing Hughes was caught between his oath to tell the truth and evidentiary limits on what he could explain.

The state must file a respondent’s brief before the Court of Appeals decides whether to hold oral arguments or rule on the written record.11FITSNews. Rose Petal Murder Appeal Sharpens Arguments for Overturning Convictions

John Mello’s Arrest

Within three hours of Hughes telling jurors that Mello had offered him money to kill Parcell, the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office obtained arrest warrants for Mello. On February 19, 2025, Mello, 64, was arrested in Greenville and charged with accessory before the fact to a felony and solicitation to commit a felony. He had already been charged alongside Hughes with distributing pornographic photos of Parcell.12Court TV. Zachary Hughes’ Testimony Leads to John Mello’s Arrest for Parcell’s Murder

A judge denied bond and sent the case to circuit court. Mello has denied the allegations. As of mid-2026 he remained in the Greenville County Detention Center awaiting trial and had not entered a plea.13WYFF. John Mello Arrest in Canebrake Murder Investigation4ABC News. The Bradly Post Angle

While investigating the murder, deputies found thousands of images of child pornography on devices belonging to Post, Parcell’s fiancé. Post was arrested days after Parcell’s death and faced nearly a dozen charges. In March 2026 he pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual exploitation of a minor and received a seven-year sentence, but with credit for time served and good behavior he walked out of the Greenville County jail without additional prison time. The South Carolina Attorney General’s Office said it had not been notified of the release and had intended to pursue a sentence that included prison.14WRDW. This material is the backbone of Hughes’s appeal. The trial court kept it from the jury, and the appellate court will decide whether that exclusion was reversible error.11FITSNews. Rose Petal Murder Appeal Sharpens Arguments for Overturning Convictions
