Zion Teasley: Murder Charges, Death Penalty, and Prior Record

Zion William Teasley is an Arizona man charged with first-degree murder in the April 2023 stabbing death of 29-year-old hiker Lauren Heike on a north Phoenix trail. Maricopa County prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. Teasley, 22 at the time of his arrest, also faces a separate aggravated assault and burglary case tied to a 2020 knife attack on another woman, and a 10-count indictment for sexual exploitation of a minor. His murder trial is scheduled for January 4, 2027.¹

What Prosecutors Say He Did

On the morning of April 28, 2023, Lauren Heike went for a walk on a route near Scottsdale Road and Mayo Boulevard leading to the Reach 11 recreation area in northeast Phoenix. Investigators say she was ambushed, chased through a barbed wire fence, and stabbed 15 times. Her body was found the next morning at about 10:30 a.m., and she had defensive wounds indicating she fought back.²³

Teasley lived less than a mile and a half from the trail.⁴ Police said he was known to carry a pocketknife with a three-inch blade consistent with Heike’s wounds.⁵

How Police Identified Him

Phoenix detectives built the case in a matter of days. Surveillance cameras captured Heike and Teasley walking the same path within a short window, and other footage showed a man running from the trail and climbing a barbed wire fence. A former employer recognized Teasley in the footage and told police he appeared to be wearing clothing stolen from their store.⁵

The break came from Heike’s shoe, recovered near the fence. Preliminary DNA analysis matched a profile in a criminal database to Teasley.⁶ Cell phone location data placed him at the scene at the relevant time.⁵ Officers arrested him at his apartment on the evening of May 4, 2023, just before he was set to leave for a family funeral. A judge found probable cause for first-degree murder the next day and set bond at $1 million.²

What He Told Detectives

A Phoenix police report released in 2025 detailed Teasley’s statements during his initial interrogation. Shown a photograph of Heike, he said, “That’s what I would want to look like, except a little bit more brown.” Shown surveillance footage of the suspect, he answered, “That’s me. I think, is it? I don’t know.”⁴

He told investigators he knew about Heike from the news but did not recall meeting her. Pressed for the truth, he asked, “What do you want me to do? Just give up my life?” and called the situation a “death sentence.” He denied planning any attack, saying he was “not the type of person to kill another person” and that if he had done something like that, “it definitely would not be premeditated.” During the same interview, Teasley disclosed in a written note to the officer that he was transgender.⁴

The Alleged Motive

Prosecutors allege Teasley killed Heike in a jealous rage tied to her appearance. Police say Teasley wrote diary entries in the days before the killing about his gender identity and sexuality: “I have been battling with my gender identity and sexuality… I am Christian, so this isn’t allowed.”⁷ Investigators also found a photograph of Teasley wearing an outfit similar to what Heike had on when she was killed. Police described the attack as random in that no prior communication between the two was ever found.⁶

The Other Charges Against Him

2020 Knife Attack and Home Invasion

After the murder arrest, investigators connected Teasley to an earlier attack. In January 2020, a woman returning to her apartment near 43rd Avenue and Thunderbird Road in Phoenix was confronted by a man who forced his way inside and stabbed her multiple times before she fought him off. Shown a photo lineup after the Heike arrest, she identified Teasley as her attacker.⁸ He was charged with one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of first-degree burglary.⁹

Sexual Exploitation of a Minor

In February 2025, a Maricopa County grand jury indicted Teasley on 10 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, a class 2 felony. Prosecutors allege he possessed and possibly shared sexually explicit images of a child under 15 between March 8, 2019, and July 4, 2020. His first court appearance on these counts was February 6, 2025.¹⁰

Prior Record and Background

Teasley had a substantial criminal record before the murder charge. In 2020, he was arrested for repeatedly robbing two Circle K convenience stores in north Phoenix and later entered a plea deal on charges of armed robbery, robbery, and disorderly conduct stemming from incidents in May, June, and July of that year. He was released from prison in November 2022, roughly five months before Heike’s death, and was still on probation at the time of the killing.¹¹

Before those convictions, Teasley briefly enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He entered recruit training at the San Diego depot on March 25, 2019, and was separated by June 17, 2019, before completing boot camp. The Marine Corps declined to release the reason, citing the Privacy Act.¹²

Around the time of the Heike killing, Teasley had recently been fired from a sportswear store located near the Reach 11 trail. Coworkers told police he was terminated for being aggressive toward female employees and was suspected of stealing merchandise.¹³

The Phoenix Officer Connection

An ABC15 investigation reported that a Phoenix patrol officer had an undisclosed personal relationship with Teasley. According to the police report, the two exchanged a large volume of messages up until the day of the arrest. After Teasley was taken into custody on May 4, 2023, the officer searched his phone for “Lauren Heike,” “Zion,” and “Teasley.” He later told squad mates he had a relationship with Teasley but had not reported it to his supervisor. The Phoenix Police Department investigated and suspended him for failing to disclose the connection. Investigators said the attack on Heike was still random, noting no prior communication between Heike and Teasley was ever found.⁶

Trial Status and the Death Penalty

Teasley has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Lauren Heike, and the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office is seeking the death penalty.³ County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said the same team of prosecutors handling the murder case is working on the 2020 assault charges.⁸ The trial was originally set for October 2025 but was pushed to January 4, 2027, as the additional charges complicated proceedings.¹⁴
